Bollini Reaches Match Play at Junior Amateur

Nico Bollini of Yorba Linda advanced to match play in the U.S. Junior Amateur after shooting par 70 in the second round of stroke play at The Country Club of York in York, Pa.

Bollini’s two-day total of 143 put him in a tie for 20th, nine strokes behind 14-year-old medalist Sonny Nimkhum of Cerritos. Nimkhum set a tournament stroke-play record by shooting six-under 134 (66-68). Defending champion James Oh of Lakewood (69-66) finished tied for second. The top 64 begin match play today.

YOUTH BASEBALL

Ricky Munguia hit a home run and pitched three innings for the victory as the Fullerton Stingers beat the Baltimore Sox, 18-3, at the AAU 14-and-under World Series in Chickasha, Okla.

The Stingers have one more game left in championship pool play but have already clinched a spot in the championship round that starts Friday.

AQUATICS

The Southern California Junior Olympic Age-Group Swimming Championships will be Aug. 4-8 at Heritage Park in Irvine. Preliminaries will begin each day at 9 a.m., and championship finals at 5 p.m.

* Fullerton Aquatics Sports Team finished first and the Irvine Novaquatics second at last weekend’s Southern California Swimming Senior Championships in Fullerton.

* Saddleback College sophomore Brian Weathersby (El Toro High) has accepted a scholarship to Cal Baptist.

SOFTBALL

The 15th annual American Fastpitch Assn. International Friendship Tournament will be held Aug. 8-11 at Maxwell Park in Anaheim. Girls’ travel softball teams composed of high school players from 14 states, as well as Japan and Canada, will compete.
