LOS ANGELES — Police are investigating as a possible homicide the death of a man found inside a burning car in the downtown garment district.
When firefighters arrived at an alley near Santee and 16th streets shortly before 10 p.m. Thursday, they found a 1988 Mercury engulfed in flames, said police spokeswoman Charlotte Broughton.
After putting out the blaze, she said, firefighters found a man inside the vehicle.
The man appeared to be a Latino in his early 20s, said Scott Carrier, a spokesman for the county coroner’s office. Although the body was badly burned, he said, the office has made a tentative identification.
Investigators are trying to contact family members and obtain dental records to confirm the man’s identity.
