A pitchers’ duel is unlikely, but the 23rd annual Bernie Milligan All-Star baseball game at 1 p.m. today at Stengel Field in Glendale will showcase plenty of pitchers with outstanding credentials.

Each team features a pitcher who started in a 1999 section championship game--right-hander Justin Wiley of Hart High for the East and left-hander Mike Kunes of Chatsworth for the West.

Wiley, who finished 11-1 with 81 strikeouts in 79 innings, started in Hart’s 10-9 Southern Section Division II championship victory over Santa Maria Righetti.

Kunes, who finished 13-1 with 91 strikeouts in 83 1/3 innings, pitched a complete game in Chatsworth’s 17-7, six-inning City Championship victory over Poly.

Other 10-game winners among the game’s 17 pitchers include Carlos Reguengo (14-3) of Poly and Phil Polanco (10-1) of Notre Dame for the East, and Kameron Loe (10-1) of Granada Hills and Mike Jackson (10-3) of Crespi for the West.

Leo Rosales of Reseda finished 12-3 with 122 strikeouts in 92 innings, but he is not expected to pitch for the West. He also played shortstop for the Regents.

Hard-throwing left-hander Jordan Olson of Crescenta Valley is expected to start for the East. Jordan (9-3), the winning pitcher in the 1998 Division I final, struck out 148 in 82 innings this season.

Phil Torres of Crescenta Valley and Jeremy Lawrence of Grant will coach the East. Chuck Berrington of Westlake and Steve Thompson of Granada Hills will coach the West.

A home run-hitting contest will precede the game at 11 a.m.
