Blumfield, Redlin Share City Softball Award

Shortstop Cara Blumfield and pitcher Ashley Redlin, who helped El Camino Real High win the City Championship softball title, have been selected co-players of the year in the City.

Other Conquistadores on the All-City team are catcher Christina Enea and second baseman Jacqui Goodchild. Pitcher Patty Del Real of Kennedy also was selected to the All-City team.

Coach Neils Ludlow of El Camino Real was chosen coach of the year.

* Jenny Pitillo of Canoga Park High and Tashean Thomas of North Hollywood were selected co-most valuable players of the East Valley League.

BASEBALL

* Five area players selected in the amateur baseball draft last week have signed contracts, including Pierce College outfielder Covelli Crisp, who was drafted in the seventh round by the St. Louis Cardinals.

The others are: catcher Josh Goldfield of Moorpark College and Calabasas High with the Arizona Diamondbacks, who drafted him in the 41st round; outfielder Dan Phillips of Cal State Northridge, Pierce College and Chatsworth High with the Colorado Rockies, who drafted him in the 15th round; outfielder Matt Riordan of Loyola Marymount and Westlake High with the Baltimore Orioles, who drafted him in the 14th round; third baseman John Puccinelli of Notre Dame High with the San Diego Padres, who drafted him in the ninth round.

* Junior pitcher Jamie Shields of Hart has been chosen the player of the year from the Foothill League.

BASKETBALL

* The Bobby Braswell Basketball Camp will be from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Aug. 2-6 at the Cal State Northridge Activities Center.

Braswell, Northridge coach of three seasons, his staff and players, and other college and high school coaches will serve as instructors.

The cost is $225 and includes hot lunches, written evaluation, medical insurance, T-shirt and basketball.

* Jack Van Patten has been named girls’ coach at Hoover. He replaces Jenny Cervantez, who was 8-31 in two seasons.

TENNIS

* Meilen Tu of Porter Ranch, who attended Granada Hills High, will compete in the Franklin Life/Town of Mount Pleasant U.S. Tennis Assn. Women’s Challenger event Tuesday through June 20.

Tu, 21, who won the girls’ 18 junior national championship in 1994 by beating Martina Hingis, won USTA Challenger events in Santa Clara and Lakeland, Fla., in 1996.

* Junior Quinn Borchard of Rio Mesa High was selected most valuable player in the Pacific View League. Borchard, the Spartans’ No. 1 player, won the league singles title.

SOCCER

* Tryouts for the North Valley Soccer Club will be held at Monroe High beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday and June 19.

VOLLEYBALL

* The Cal State Northridge volleyball camp is set for one-week runs July 5-9 and Aug. 9-13.

Cost is $160 per week, with each session four hours. The camp, run by women’s Coach Lian Lu, is for beginner and advanced players.
