Cunerty Dominates Golf Tournament

Bill Cunerty, the men’s and women’s golf coach at Saddleback College, won the championship flight of the 9th Long Beach men’s senior amateur championship Friday.

Cunerty had four birdies and three bogeys to close with a one-under 71 at Recreation Park and finished with a three-round total of five-under 211. Len Santoro (218) of Fountain Valley was second.

Cunerty, who also had rounds of 71 at El Dorado and 69 at Skylinks, earned a spot in the $140,000 Long Beach Open, which is July 22-25.

“I just didn’t make a lot of mistakes,” said Cunerty, who had no double bogeys in the tournament.

VOLLEYBALL

* UC Irvine’s Donnie Rafter and Mike Rupp have been selected to play for the United States men’s volleyball team at the World University games in July.

Rafter, an outside hitter, was a second team All-American last season and a first-team All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation pick. Rupp, also an outside hitter, was honorable mention in the MPSF. The World University games will be held July 2-10 in Palma de Mallorca, Spain.

AUTO RACING

* Zachary Mitosinka, 21, of Santa Ana, was moved from the intensive care unit Friday at St. Joseph Hospital in Orange. Mitosinka suffered a ruptured spleen, collapsed lung and broken shoulder June 5 in the Baja 500 in Mexico when a Trophy Truck driven by Jason Baldwin crashed into spectators. The crash killed one and injured 10, including eight spectators. Mitosinka, in stable condition, is the last of the injured still hospitalized.

BASEBALL

* Greg Schwenn of Los Alamitos High pitched 4 2/3 innings of shutout relief, leading the South to a 6-5 victory over the North in the 30th California State All-Star baseball series Friday at Cal State Fullerton.

Calvary Chapel’s Randy Blood and Chad Sterbens each doubled to knock in runs in the fifth inning, tying the score at 5-5. In the bottom of ninth Yucaipa’s Matt Carson led off with a double and scored the winning run on a throwing error.

The South team is made up of players from Orange County, Los Angeles and San Diego. The rest of the state makes up the North team. The teams play again tonight at 7 and Sunday at 11.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

* Mater Dei center Jamal Sampson and guard Steve Scoggin have accepted invitations to participate in the second USA Basketball Youth Development Festival.

The event takes place June 23-27 at the Olympic training facility in Colorado Springs.

The 6-foot-9 Sampson, who will be a junior, was injured most of last season.

Scoggin, who will be a senior, led the Monarchs in scoring and was The Times Orange County Player of the Year.
