Meyer Replaces Santa Clara Legend

Martin Meyer has been hired as boys’ basketball coach at Santa Clara High, replacing legendary Coach Lou Cvijanovich, who retired in March after 41 years.

Meyer, 39, former junior varsity basketball coach at Camarillo High, is a sergeant in the Oxnard police department, a position he plans to keep. He will be considered a walk-on coach.

Cvijanovich set a state record with 829 career victories and guided the Saints to three state championships, including the Division V title this year.

“[Meyer] brings plenty of energy to the program,” said John Lorenzana, Santa Clara athletic director. “I think he’s going to be great for us.”

Chris Ruffinelli, junior varsity coach at St. Bonaventure High, was the other finalist for the position.
