Cal State Fullerton center fielder Reed Johnson has signed with the Toronto Blue Jays and will begin his professional career at Class-A St. Catharines, which is in the Canadian providence of Ontario. The team is in the New York-Penn League.

Johnson, a junior, was drafted in the 17th round.

Johnson, who became the first Big West Conference player to get more than 100 hits and score more than 100 runs in the same season, led the Titans in hitting in the College World Series with a .364 average. He batted .396 for the season.

TRACK AND FIELD

Cal State Fullerton freshman Brandon Campbell finished second in the high jump at the USA Track and Field Junior Championships Sunday at North Texas, becoming the first Titan to qualify for the Pan American Junior championships in Tampa, Fla., this summer.

Campbell, who came to Fullerton on a basketball scholarship from Cardinal Ritter High in St. Louis, cleared 7 feet 1/2 inch, bettering his school-record 7- 1/4. He also holds school records in the long jump (24-5 3/4, set at the Big West Conference championships) and 400 meters (47.55 seconds, set at the Mt. San Antonio College Invitational).

Another Titan freshman, Anna Doty, from Merced, competed in the triple jump Sunday but failed to advance. The top two finishers in each event qualify for the Pan-Am Junior Championships.

* John Knox has been hired as girls’ cross-country and boys’ and girls’ track and field coach at Irvine High, Athletic Director Erik Terry announced. Knox, who has been at Century High the last 10 years, also has coached at Santa Ana and Orange Coast colleges.

He replaces Randi Rossi, who left after 19 seasons to become boys’ and girls’ cross-country coach at Northwood High.

SOCCER

The Southern California Blues under-17 girls’ and the Mission Viejo Mirage under-18 girls’ teams are among five repeat qualifiers at the U.S. Youth Soccer Far West Regional Championships through Saturday in Bakersfield and San Bernardino.

The competition brings together 244 State Cup champions and selected runners-up from 14 state associations. The under-16, under-17, under-18 and under-19 boys’ and girls’ champions will advance to the 1999 Snickers U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships, July 20-25, in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

The Blues, from San Juan Capistrano, and the Mirage are playing in the under-16 through under-19 competition in Bakersfield at Kern County Soccer Park.

At the under-12 through under-15 competition in San Bernardino are NHB of Huntington Beach (under-13 boys), Wolfpack Blue of Huntington Beach (under-15 girls) and the Southern California Blues (under-14 girls). Games are played at the CYSA-South Soccer Complex.

Games at both locations start at 8 a.m. daily, and admission is free.

VOLLEYBALL

Mike Homer has been hired as girls’ volleyball coach at Troy High, Athletic Director John Turek said.

Homer was an assistant at La Habra the Past four seasons and has coached for the Cal Juniors club team. He replaces Sue Garrison, who resigned after two seasons. Troy finished fourth in the Freeway League last season.
