Clyde Richards has resigned after 13 seasons as coach at Burbank High, citing health reasons.

Richards, 60, guided the Bulldogs to the last 12 Foothill League championships and compiled a league record of 166-2 during his career. Burbank won the Southern Section Division III title in 1993.

Richards, a 1958 graduate of Burbank, will remain at the school as an economics teacher.

* Second-seeded Bernadette Bayani of Simi Valley and No. 4 Maureen Diaz of Glendale won in the quarterfinal of the girls’ 18 draw Friday to reach the semifinals of the Southern California Junior Championships at Los Caballeros Sports Village in Fountain Valley.

Bayani defeated Tiffany Brymer of Apple Valley, 6-4, 7-6. Diaz rallied to defeated Amber Liu of La Mesa, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.

In the boys’ 12 draw, top-seeded Sergy Vagramian of Glendale outlasted Jeff Fitch of Encinitas, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. No. 3 Samuel Tadevosian of Glendale defeated Carsten Ball of Newport Beach, 6-2, 7-6.

Fourth-seeded Ryan Heinberg of Agoura advanced in the boys’ 16 draw, defeating Matthew Loucks of Irvine, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.

No. 13 Carl McCaffery of Highland, Calif., upset No. 3 Philip Sheng of Thousand Oaks, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 in the boys’ 18 division.

In girls’ 16 play, Natalie Braverman of Newport Beach upset No. 3 Brooke Borisoff of Agoura, 6-4, 6-2. Danon Beatty of Bakersfield upset No. 4 Amber Harper of Tarzana, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3, in a girls’ 12 match.

GOLF

* Brandon Christianson of Valencia shot four-under-par 56 to win the boys’ 12-13 division of the Scholl Canyon Junior Golf Championship at Scholl Canyon Golf and Tennis in Glendale.

Jeremy Bovill shot 58 and Daniel Cho had a 59 to finish second and third in the boys’ 12-13 division.

Sara Jones won the girls’ 12-14 division with a 60, followed by Jennifer Osborn and Jane Lee, who each shot 62. Osborn took second on a card-off.

Michael Kushell won the boys’ 11-and-under division over Nick Geyer on a card-off after each shot 30 for nine holes. Matthew Pierce was third at 31.

Angela Park won the girls’ 11-and-under division with a 33. Grace Woo and Dorothy Lee each shot 36, with Woo taking second in a card-off.

TRACK AND FIELD

* Birmingham High will host a series of 10 all-comers meets, starting at 6 p.m. next Wednesday.

Meets will be held at Birmingham every Wednesday and Friday through July 30.

Youth events--for those in middle school or younger--and the pole vault will start at 6 p.m. The novice, open and masters competition will start after the conclusion of the youth events.

BASEBALL

* The Westlake Senators were eliminated from the Junior Olympics in Tucson after losing to the Chet Lemon Juice, 12-2, Thursday.

Westlake finished with a 6-1 record in the tournament for players 16-and-under.

* The American Legion District 20 all-star game will be held at 11 a.m. July 5 at Valley College.

BASKETBALL

* Will Sheslow, a starting guard at Montclair Prep last season as a freshman, is playing for Agoura this summer and will apparently transfer to the school.

HONORS

* Cal State Northridge had 27 student-athletes chosen to the Big Sky Conference spring all-academic team.

In women’s golf, Kelley Carlson, Amanda Carmichael, Kimberly Kelly and Bonnie Murphy were selected. In women’s tennis, Shaheen Bhanji , Andrea Engels, Isabella Peintner, Kendra Segura and Adelene Tan made the team.

Members of the men’s track and field team who were selected included Brian Abney, John Dagata, John Greene, Brad Hegemier, Brian May and Javier Ramirez.

Women’s track and field team members included Mary Alessi, Sarah Bonilla, Andrea Bruins, Jennifer Capehart, Lisa Clancy, Joy Finch, Julie Fox, Erin Nichols, Jennifer Overlock, Lisa Rugenstein, Stephanie Werth and Desiree Woodman.

MISCELLANY

* A reception and roast is scheduled for 4-7 p.m. July 11 at Notre Dame High to honor John Skeese, who is retiring after 36 years.

Skeese coached football, golf and track during his four decades at Notre Dame.
