2 Killed, 2 Wounded in North Hollywood Bar Shooting

A woman and a man were killed and two other people were wounded in a shooting at a North Hollywood bar early Saturday, leaving police scrambling to find a motive and a suspect.

About 12:10 a.m., the California Inn, a small tavern at 11717 Victory Blvd. that was filled with close to 30 patrons, was jolted by gunfire.

Witnesses told police that they briefly caught a glimpse of a man who stood in the front doorway, pointed a handgun and started shooting.

Virginia Chavez, a 25-year-old North Hollywood woman sitting at a table just inches from the entrance, was struck first, according to Det. Mike Coffey of the Los Angeles Police Department. Chavez died at the scene of multiple gunshot wounds.

A 27-year-old North Hollywood man, struck in the torso, was taken to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, where he died. His name was being withheld as police attempted to reach his family.

A 23-year-old man was taken to a hospital, where he was listed in critical condition with gunshot wounds to the torso. A 22-year-old man escaped serious injury when a bullet grazed his head. He was treated at Providence and released.

Both of the wounded men are from North Hollywood.
