Flames raced through a lumberyard late Monday, creating an orange glow in the night sky but causing no injuries, a Los Angeles fire official said.

The fire was reported about 8:50 p.m. in the 11000 block of Sutter Avenue at Louvre Street, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Jim Wells.

About 45 firefighters fought the blaze, which appears to have started in a storage area and quickly spread though an area filled with lumber and sawdust, Wells said.

A Fire Department helicopter was called in to prevent the spread of embers as well as to aid crews battling flames on the ground, Wells said.

The fire was extinguished by 9:33 p.m. with no immediate reports of injuries to firefighters or civilians, he said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation, Wells said, adding that no immediate damage estimate was available.
