Tom Caffrey has been named the first football coach at Fairmont High, Athletic Director J.T. Cameron announced Thursday.

The Huskies will play a freelance schedule in 1999 and have been accepted into the Academy League for 2000.

Caffrey was coach and athletic director at Heritage Christian, and previously coached at Whittier Christian. He began both 11-man football programs at each school, and will get a chance to do the same at Fairmont, where he will teach social studies and physical education.

Heritage Christian dropped football for the 1998 season for lack of participation; it was 3-6 overall, 2-5 in the Victory League under Caffrey in 1997. His career record is 200-88-3.

Enrollment at Fairmont is 255. Cameron said the program is still looking for a game in Week 8 to complete its 10-game schedule.
