Sickles, Matadors Slice Up Dons, 7-3

Jeremy Sickles hit two home runs and finished with four runs batted in, and Kevin Patrick added three hits and three RBIs to power Cal State Northridge past San Francisco, 7-3, in a nonconference baseball game Friday at San Francisco.

Jim DeBiase (5-0) allowed three runs and five hits over seven innings. He struck out four and walked one.

Sickles’ three-run home run in the second inning ignited the Matadors (12-13).

Patrick and Sickles hit consecutive home runs with two out in the third to give Northridge a 5-0 lead.

Patrick added a two-run single in the ninth.

Cal Lutheran 8, Pomona-Pitzer 2--Jeremy Schlosser had two doubles and two RBIs to help the Kingsmen win a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Cal Lutheran.

Schlosser had a two-run double in the fourth to give Cal Lutheran (10-3, 9-1) a 5-0 lead.

Tom Canale (4-1) allowed four hits, struck out 10 and walked three in seven innings for Cal Lutheran.

The Master’s 18, Northwood 8--Chris Kollmann, Aaron Penberthy, Rob Avila and Luke Kollmann hit home runs in the seventh inning, when the Mustangs scored eight runs to win a nonconference game at Master’s.

Kollmann finished with four RBIs.

Trailing by five runs after a half inning, the Mustangs tied the score, 6-6, in the fifth.

Mike Ploharz pitched seven innings, allowing six runs while striking out four.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The Master’s 92, Schreiner 74--Elizabeth Hansell had 27 points and 15 rebounds and reserve Molly Scott contributed 17 points and a career-best 17 rebounds for the host Mustangs in an NAIA Far West Region Independent first-round victory.

Sara Scheffer contributed 18 points, seven rebounds and seven assists for Master’s (28-4), which had a 63-48 rebounding edge over Schreiner (7-19).

WOMEN’S TRACK

NCAA indoor championships--Junior Nancy James of Cal State Northridge placed a nonqualifying eighth in a heat of the mile in the meet at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis.

James, a graduate of Hart High, clocked 4:56.09 in a heat that was won by Carrie Messner of Colorado in 4:44.91.

The top three finishers in each of two heats and the next four fastest finishers advanced to today’s final.

James ran a school indoor record of 4:53.32 to win the mile in the Big Sky Conference championships at Idaho State on Feb. 23.

Moorpark 102, Citrus 28, Antelope Valley 22, Glendale 20--Freshman Angela Foster won three events to help the Raiders win a Western State Conference meet at Moorpark.

Foster won the shotput at 44-10 1/4, the discus at 124-10 and the javelin at 115-7 for the Raiders (10-0, 10-0).

Foster placed sixth in the girls’ shotput in the 1998 state championships for Ventura High.

MEN’S TRACK

Moorpark 102, Citrus 42, Glendale 21, Antelope Valley 16--Freshmen Ray Carmel, Demetrus Patterson and Peter Paplanus each won a sprint event to help the host Raiders win a WSC meet.

Carmel clocked 10.6 in the 100 meters, Patterson timed 22.3 in the 200 and Paplanus ran 49.6 in the 400 for the Raiders (10-0, 10-0).
