Division II-AA Girls’ Basketball Final

Foothill (27-3)--Sophomore Kristen Mann (15.5 points, 9.5 rebounds) at 6 foot 2, and junior Chavaughn Brown (14.6 points, 11 rebounds), also 6-2, are formidable inside threats and against most teams would have a decided advantage. That doesn’t exist against Brea, which can match them inside athletically and has greater depth at the position. That puts the pressure on Foothill’s three guards, who average 17.2 points between them. They must control the tempo and turn this into a half-court game against a team with more experience and talent. Foothill has a 16-game winning streak since losing consecutive games to Chino Hills Ayala (80-50), Ontario Chaffey (62-46) and Rialto Eisenhower (55-51); Brea beat each of those teams by no less than 22 points. The Knights must be able to pass inside to Mann and Brown for quick shots.

Brea Olinda (27-3)--This is what scares Foothill Coach Ty Watkins: Brea scored 83 points against Harbor City Narbonne and 73 against El Toro, and no matter how one twists Foothill’s 34.7 defensive average, it just doesn’t compare against those kinds of numbers against that kind of competition. Chelsea Trotter (21 points, 11.5 rebounds) is a dependable go-to player inside, a hedge against a poor night shooting from the perimeter by her teammates. Trotter scored 32 against Narbonne, 31 against El Toro and, along with Kate Ides (10.2 points, 7.1 rebounds) and Lindsey Davidson (14.9 points, 6.1 assists), is a solid big-game player. Trotter’s knee could be a factor. She injured it in the opening minutes of the semifinals, then watched the last 3 1/2 quarters from the bench as Brea scored a 22-point victory over Canyon, the team that lost the league title to Foothill by one point.

Key to the game--On paper, the only way Brea loses is if it chokes.
