Sellz’s No-Hitter Lifts Chatsworth at San Fernando

Scott Sellz, Chatsworth High’s senior right-hander, pitched his first no-hitter and defeated San Fernando, 9-0, on Tuesday in a Northwest Valley Conference opener at San Fernando.

Sellz (2-0) struck out four, walked five and hit a batter.

Excellent catches by center fielder Chad Redfern and right fielder Matt Cassel helped preserve the gem.

Sellz had two hits, including a home run, and drove in two runs for the Chancellors (5-1).

In other City openers:

El Camino Real 14, Cleveland 1--Scott Gilmore hit a fifth-inning grand slam that ended a Northwest Valley Conference game at El Camino Real because of the 10-run rule.

Ryan Gunches (2-0) struck out six, walked one and allowed three hits for El Camino Real (5-1).

Kennedy 11, Birmingham 4--Alex Avlas had three hits and scored two runs for the Golden Cougars in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Kennedy.

Chad Shaw had a double and two RBIs for Kennedy (2-4).

Poly 8, Reseda 1--Johnny Manuel drove in three runs in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Reseda.

Angel Espindola had two hits, including a double, for Poly (3-3).

Sylmar 4, Monroe 3--Ivan Hernandez’s run-scoring single in the the seventh inning gave the Spartans a Valley Pac-8 Conference victory at Sylmar (5-1).

In other games

Rio Mesa 3, Oxnard 2--Greg Ramirez struck out eight and allowed one earned run for the Spartans in a Pacific View League opener at Oxnard.

Ramirez (3-0) allowed six hits and three walks for Rio Mesa (5-1).

Matt Merricks, Omari Parker and Matt Adams each had two hits for Oxnard (2-3).

Merricks struck out 16 and walked eight.

Hoover 12, Muir 1--Charley Hinchcliffe had three hits and four runs batted in for the Tornadoes (4-1) in a Pacific League opener at Hoover.

Saugus 8, Canyon 6--Jeff Mayberry had three hits, three runs and two RBIs for the Centurions (4-2) in a Foothill League opener at Canyon.

Mike Munn of Canyon (2-4) had three hits, including two home runs and a double.

Highland 10, Ventura 9--John Santor’s two-out grand slam in the seventh inning lifted the Bulldogs at Highland.

Rob Cowan (1-1) pitched two innings, allowing one run on two hits with one strikeout. Cowan had three hits, including a home run.

St. Bonaventure 1, Santa Clara 0--Gilbert Infante (1-0) pitched a two-hitter, striking out 10 for the Seraphs in a nonleague victory at St. Bonaventure.

Zach Gallagher had two hits for St. Bonaventure.

Royal 15, Palmdale 12--Derek O’Keefe hit a grand slam to help the Highlanders win a nonleague game at Royal.

Casey O’Quinn hit a home run and had three RBIs for Royal (4-1-1).

Matt Plante hit a three-run home run for Palmdale (3-3).

Alemany 12, Paraclete 2--Chris Suazo (2-1) pitched a three-hitter for the Indians in a nonleague victory at Alemany.

Jess Fernandez had three hits, including two home runs, and drove in three runs for Alemany(3-3).

Hart 19, Burbank 1--Jamie Shields (3-0) allowed three hits and struck out 12 in five innings for the Indians Hart (5-1) in a Foothill League opener at Hart.

Tim Hutting had three hits and drove in three runs and Marke Horvat had three hits and four RBIs.

Chaminade 23, Loyola 1--Ryan Soroka had three doubles, a home run, a single and four RBIs in a Mission League opener at Loyola.

Mike Nesbit had three hits and four RBIs for Chaminade (5-1).

Simi Valley 13, Antelope Valley 4--Mike Zumwalt, Bryan Stephan and Mike Causey combined on a five-hitter, and David Land, Mike Nykoluk and Eric Peach each had three hits for the Pioneers (3-3) in a nonleague game at Antelope Valley.

Fillmore 12, Nordhoff 6--Aaron Goodenough, Isaac Oseguera and John Vega each had three hits for the Flashes (4-0-1) in a nonleague game at Nordhoff.
