Hoover’s Herbert Pitches Second No-Hitter in a Row

Cori Herbert is back.

Herbert, a junior right-hander who battled leg problems last season, pitched her second consecutive no-hitter on Friday to lead Hoover High to an 8-0 victory over Burbank in the championship game of the Hoover softball tournament.

Herbert (6-2), most valuable player of the tournament, struck out 17 to finish the three-game tournament with 45 strikeouts.

Junior outfielder Evelyn Crowder homered, singled and drove in three runs for the Tornadoes (6-2).

Camarillo 12, Hueneme 0--Kathryn Nevard pitched her second no-hitter against the Vikings this week in a Pacific View League game at Hueneme.

Nevard (5-0), who struck out 10, allowed only one baserunner, hitting a batter in the third.

Melissa Ziese homered, singled and drove in four runs for the Scorpions (6-0, 2-0), ranked No. 8 in the region by The Times.

San Fernando 5, Eagle Rock 3--Nancy Esqueda’s three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth gave the Tigers (8-2) a Hoover tournament consolation victory at Brand Park.

Gabriella Barragan of San Fernando had three hits.

Calabasas 6, Santa Paula 0--Amy Rosson (5-2) pitched a no-hitter, striking out 10, and had three hits in a Frontier League victory for the Coyotes.

Carly Weinstein had three hits for Calabasas (5-2-1, 1-0).

Nordhoff 12, Carpinteria 2--Beth Cain pitched a no-hitter and drove in four runs on three singles for the Rangers (2-2) in a nonleague game at Nordhoff.

Cain struck out two and walked seven, with a first-inning error allowing two to score.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Chaminade 13, Notre Dame 5--Ted Hall won three sets at No. 1 singles but the Knights (4-3, 2-2) fell in a Mission League match at Van Nuys Sherman Oaks Park.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Notre Dame d. Chaminade, 15-9, 18-20, 15-6, 11-15, 15-6--Kurt Charron served for three of his six aces for host Notre Dame (2-2, 2-2) in the decisive game of a five-set victory.

Bert DeViterbo of Notre Dame had 21 kills, including 11 in the third game.

Brian Bardos had 17 kills and Paul Jocas had 32 digs and 44 assists for Chaminade (0-5, 0-3).
