Clark Pays Dividends for Detroit

If early results are an indication, Detroit is the trade-deadline king for this season.

Wendel Clark poked a loose puck in the crease past goalie John Vanbiesbrouck 2:26 into overtime for his second goal as a Red Wing, lifting Detroit to a 3-2 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers at Detroit on Sunday.

The victory was the Red Wings’ third in as many games that Clark and defenseman Chris Chelios have played for Detroit since being acquired in trading-deadline deals Tuesday.

“We had a good team before and we have to be a better team now,” said Detroit forward Sergei Fedorov, who assisted on Clark’s game-winner.

The loss ended a three-game winning streak for the Flyers, who were without center Eric Lindros. He was suspended for two games by the NHL for a high-sticking incident Saturday with Petr Nedved of the New York Rangers.

Dallas 3, Nashville 0--Three players scored and goalie Roman Turek extended his unbeaten streak to five (4-0-1) as the Stars clinched their second consecutive Western Conference title at Nashville.

New Jersey 2, Florida 2--Rookie Mark Parrish scored his second goal of the game with 2:07 remaining as the Panthers rallied to tie the Devils at Sunrise, Fla.

Chicago 3, St. Louis 1--Tony Amonte scored three goals, including his 40th of the season, to power the Blackhawks to a victory over the Blues at Chicago.

Carolina 3, Tampa Bay 3--Ron Francis scored once and had an assist, but the struggling Hurricanes blew a two-goal lead, tying the Lightning at Greensboro, N.C.

Buffalo 4, Pittsburgh 3--Dixon Ward scored the fourth overtime goal of his career as the Sabres scored twice to rally from a 3-1 deficit in the third period and defeat the Penguins at Buffalo.

Edmonton 5, San Jose 2--Bill Guerin scored twice in the third period to reach a career high of 30 goals as the Oilers defeated the Sharks at Edmonton, Canada.
