Servite Wins Golden West Swim Title

Jarrod Cruzat and Phil Garcia helped lead Servite to the Golden West League boys’ swimming title Thursday at Tustin High.

The Friars dominated most of the eight individual events to win with 518 points.

Tustin finished with 400 points to take second and Ocean View was third at 273.

Cruzat won the 200 individual medley (1 minute 59.19 seconds) and the 100 backstroke (53.39) and swam on the winning 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams. Garcia won the 100 freestyle in 50.94.

Mike Cavic, a freshman from Tustin, was the school’s only double winner. He won the 50 (21.53) and the 100 butterfly (51.77).

In Golden West League girls’ swimming finals:

Freshman wins two events--Jenna Cruzat, a freshman from Rosary, led the Royals to the league title. Cruzat won the 100 butterfly (1:02.74) and the 100 backstroke (1:02.88). Rosary finished with 572 points. Tustin was second with 313.

In the Freeway League boys’ diving finals:

Sonora diver wins--Justin Zuhlke of Sonora took first with 433.60 points, followed by teammates Justin Schmuch with 355.35 and Brandon Clausen with 311.20.

In Sea View League boys’ diving:

Vincent dominates--Defending league champion Ray Vincent had little trouble keeping the title as the El Toro senior finished with 581.15 points. Owen Lyle of Santa Margarita was second (319.75).

In the Freeway League girls’ diving finals:

Cordero wins--Sonora’s Kim Cordero advanced to the Southern Section finals with a score of 320.65. Sunny Hills’ Kimberly Dyla took second with 305.30 and Troy’s Katrina Cannard placed third with 286.55 to advance.

In South Coast League girls’ diving:

Brown edges Manning--Michelle Brown of Dana Hills squeezed by Capistrano Valley’s Tiffany Manning to win the diving title with 498 points. Manning finished with 494.25. Lauren Diskin of Dana Hills was third with 435 points.

In Sea View League girls’ diving:

Routson wins--Rachelle Routson of Santa Margarita held off El Toro’s Jennifer McNally to win the league title with 418 points. McNally finished with 401.25 points.

In the Freeway League badminton finals:

Hall wins twice--La Habra’s Danette Hall teamed with Janae Smith for an 11-15, 15-1, 15-4 victory in girls’ doubles and teamed up with Jason Luib for a 15-5, 15-12 victory in mixed doubles.

In the Empire League golf final:

Rim wins--Sunny Hills freshman Mike Rim shot par (143) at Los Coyotes and Los Serranos to finish first, followed by teammate Dusty Schmidt, a senior who shot 146. El Dorado’s Chris Ironroad shot 147 for third.

In the Golden West League final:

Bollini wins--Servite’s Nico Bollini shot a two-over 145 at Green River’s Orange and Riverside courses to finish first.
