Cervenka, Herbert Tie in Strikeouts

Meredith Cervenka and Cori Herbert now have another thing in common.

The two intimidating right-handers, who earned Times’ All-Valley softball honors as freshmen, each finished the Pacific League season on Thursday tied for the lead in strikeouts in the region with 277.

Cervenka, a sophomore, struck out nine in Crescenta Valley High’s 3-0 victory over Arcadia.

Herbert, a junior, struck out seven in Hoover’s 4-3 victory over Glendale.

Cervenka (19-5), hurled a one-hitter for her 17th shutout.

Mel McCauley broke a scoreless tie with a two-run home run in the fourth inning and Melinda Moulden had two hits for the visiting Falcons (20-5), who completed their second consecutive 10-0 league season.

Herbert (17-8) allowed three hits and scored on an error in the bottom of the seventh to win the game. Nicole Platt tripled and had three runs batted in for the second-place Tornadoes (17-8, 7-3).

Thousand Oaks 4, Royal 0--Sheridan Fowler threw a two-hitter and the host Lancers (20-8, 10-2) tied Newbury Park for the Marmonte League title.

Kim Martin and Lacy Cope each had two hits for Thousand Oaks.

Hart 1, Canyon 0--Lindsey Kontra (10-3) threw a three-hitter and drove in Carly Caldaronello with a fourth-inning groundout to help Hart (21-5-1, 9-1) clinch a tie with Saugus for its second consecutive Foothill League title.

Saugus 4, Burroughs 2--Corrie Atwood (7-2) pitched a five-hitter for Saugus (16-9-1, 9-1), which claimed the Foothill League title.

Oak Park 10, Carpinteria 0--Dana Porter threw a two-hitter and struck out 12 for the host Eagles (19-4, 9-1), who clinched the Tri-Valley League co-championship.

La Reina 25, Bishop Diego 0--Stephanie Hall tripled, homered and drove in six runs, and Kristen Ward pitched a no-hitter.

The Regents (19-7, 9-1) tied Oak Park for the Tri-Valley League title.

Kerri Adams added four hits and four RBIs.

Highland 14, Palmdale 4--Keri Pulcifer and Natalie Rawson each had three hits and Angie D’Errico homered for Highland (17-10, 7-3) in a Golden League game.

Quartz Hill 17, Littlerock 7--Christa Galier hit two home runs, and Jodie Cox and Sara Moore each hit one for host Quartz Hill (24-1, 10-0) in a Golden League game.

Cox has 26 career home runs, two short of the Southern Section record.

Grace Brethren 16, L.A. Lutheran 6--Crystal Roberts hit her 27th career home run for host Grace Brethren (17-4, 12-0) in a Heritage League game.

Montclair Prep 20, Brentwood 1--Monique Lovell threw a no-hitter, struck out 10 and had four hits and seven RBIs in a Delphic League game at Brentwood.

Kelland Morrow hit a home run for Montclair Prep (9-12, 4-4).
