Chapman junior Chan Ly won two first-day matches Monday at the NCAA Division III men’s tennis singles championships in Claremont to advance to the quarterfinals and earn All-American honors.

Ly, who was unseeded, won his first-round match, beating John Watson of Coe College (Cedar Rapids, Iowa), 6-1, 6-2. In the second round, Ly dropped his first set in a tiebreaker, 6-7 (3-7), but turned the match around to defeat Thomas Waheeb of Averett College (Danville, Va.) in a tie-breaker, 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 4-1.

Ly plays Thomas Oechel of UC Santa Cruz at 9 today. Oechel beat Ly last month in semifinal match at the Ojai Tournament.

Jens Jensen, a 6-foot-5 guard from San Jose College, has signed to play basketball at UC Irvine, the school announced.

Jensen, who is from Denmark, averaged 12 points and was second in the state in free-throw shooting (89%) last season.

The Anteaters will likely add Santa Monica point guard Aras Baskauskas, who said he would try to walk on next season. Baskauskas averaged 12 points, six rebounds, six assists and three steals last season.

Irvine coaches also got some bad news: Ben Jones, a 6-foot-7 forward, dislocated his right elbow during a pickup game Friday. He will be out six to 10 weeks. Jones averaged nine points as a sophomore last season.
