Cleveland Surprises Granada Hills

Javier Gomez delivered a run-scoring single in the eighth inning to give Cleveland High a 6-5 upset over host Granada Hills in a North Valley League baseball game Tuesday.

Gomez drove in Tony Cicero to break a 5-5 tie and enhance Cleveland’s chances of earning a berth in the City Championship playoffs. The pairings will be announced tonight.

Granada Hills (20-6, 13-4 in league play), the league champion, forced extra innings with a three-run double by Jon Bringuier in the seventh. The Highlanders did not pitch ace right-hander Kameron Loe.

Gomez had three hits, including two doubles, and drove in three runs for Cleveland (11-15, 7-10).

Sylmar 10, Poly 1--Ivan Hernandez pitched a four-hitter with seven strikeouts and five walks for the Spartans (19-7, 13-4) in an East Valley League victory at Poly (22-7, 15-2).

Poly, which had clinched the league title, committed five errors that led to six unearned runs.

North Hollywood 10, Grant 9--Juan Villa’s bases-loaded single drove in Miguel Cabrera to cap a three-run seventh inning for the Huskies (8-22, 5-11), which rallied from a 9-2 deficit in an East Valley League game at North Hollywood.

Villa (3-1) entered in the seventh and retired the side in order.

Felipe Tetelboin had two hits, including a three-run home run, for Grant (17-9, 11-6).

Chatsworth 12, Birmingham 2--Mike Kunes had three hits and drove in four runs for the Chancellors (23-3, 16-1) in a West Valley League game at Chatsworth.

Kunes (10-1) hit a two-run home run in the first inning and picked up the victory in relief. He did not allow a hit or a walk and struck out three in three innings to win his ninth consecutive decision.

El Camino Real 9, Taft 1--Josh Deneau (5-3) took a no-hitter into the seventh for the Conquistadores (19-6, 12-5) in a West Valley League victory at El Camino Real.

Deneau, who struck out nine and walked one, finished with a three-hitter. Justin Wade hit a one-out single and scored on a single by Aric Haut for Taft (8-19, 3-14).

Brian Somoza had two doubles and three RBIs, and Conor Jackson hit two run-scoring doubles for the second-place Conquistadores.

Reseda 7, Monroe 4--Leo Rosales (10-2) allowed eight hits and struck out six for the Regents (16-10, 10-6) in a Mid-Valley League victory at Monroe (10-17, 7-10).

Kennedy 4, San Fernando 3--Juan Sepulveda hit a two-run home run in the sixth to lift the Golden Cougars (16-15, 10-7) in a North Valley League game at Kennedy.
