Lawrence, Irvine’s top golfer, had a so-so week with the clubs, but his efforts off the links were a big reason that Irvine students passed a referendum that raised scholarship money.

Lawrence’s golf game suffered while he worked on getting the vote out. There were perks, though. He received a standing ovation for his efforts last week at a banquet honoring Irvine’s 148 scholar athletes.

THIS WEEK

Golf: Lawrence will compete in the NCAA West Regional today through Saturday. That the tournament is being held at Tucson National gives him a home-course advantage. Lawrence grew up in Tucson and played that course, “more times than I can remember,” he said. He has been looking forward to this tournament for a while. “When I saw the schedule in September, I started to do this,” Lawrence said, pausing to lick his lips.
