Tennis Matches Continue Today

Brian Mintz and Brad Steinberg of Granada Hills High will meet Steve Choi and Burton Newman of El Camino Real in a semifinal doubles match as the City Section individual tennis tournament continues today at 2 p.m. at the L.A. Fitness Center in Woodland Hills.

In singles, No. 7-seeded Matt Jones of El Camino Real will meet No. 2-seeded Ricky Rollins of Palisades in a semifinal.

In the Southern Section, 10 teams from the region will play quarterfinal matches today.

In Division II, Harvard-Westlake will play Palm Springs at the Studio City Golf and Tennis Club, Rio Mesa will play at Sunny Hills and Thousand Oaks will meet Loyola at Meridian’s Tennis Club in Los Angeles.

In Division III, Agoura will play at Santa Ana Foothill and Westlake will meet Anaheim Canyon at North Ranch Country Club.

In Division IV, Calabasas will host Dos Pueblos and in Division V, Crespi will play Brentwood at Braemar Country Club, Thacher will play at Chadwick and Oak Park will play Campbell Hall at Valley College.

All Southern Section matches start at 3:15 p.m.

* Marissa Irvin, a Stanford freshman from Harvard-Westlake, led the Cardinal to its fourth NCAA Division I women’s tennis title of the decade by winning against Florida in singles and doubles on Sunday.

Irvin defeated Whitney Laiho, 6-1, 6-2, in singles. In doubles, she teamed with Keiko Tokuda to defeat Laiho and Stephanie Hazlett, 6-4.

Stanford defeated the defending national champions, 5-2.

BASEBALL

* Barry Zito of USC, a junior left-hander who played at Pierce College last year, has been selected pitcher of the year in the Pacific 10 Conference.

Other first-team selections from the region were sophomore outfielders Joe Borchard of Stanford and Bill Scott of UCLA.

* Josh Smaler, Harvard-Westlake’s coach the last three years, has resigned and will return to school to pursue a business degree.

SOFTBALL

* Northridge seniors Katrina Nolletti and Tara Glaister were named to the NCAA Division I all-regional team on Sunday.

* Former Thousand Oaks catcher Megan Keesling’s three-run home run helped Humboldt State win the NCAA Division II title on Sunday in Salem, Va.
