Tennis Prelims at 4 Sites This Weekend

The preliminaries of the 38th annual Adoption Guild tennis tournament take place Saturday at four area tennis clubs. Semifinals will be June 5 and finals June 6 at the Newport Beach Tennis Club.

The preliminaries will be at the Balboa Bay Racquet Club, Newport Beach Tennis Club, the Palisades Club and Racquet Club of Irvine.

Proceeds benefit Holy Family Services, a non-denominational family care agency in Orange County.

Six men’s volleyball players from Golden West and five from Orange Coast College were named to the All-Orange Empire Conference team Tuesday. The Rustlers’ Mike D’Alessandro was named conference coach of the year.

Golden West’s Scott Ogilvie was named conference MVP. Ogilvie is joined by teammates Evan Hook and Jon Thompson on the all-conference first team. OCC’s Ryan Hiskey, Kyle Anderson and Ryan Rex were named to the first team.

Rustlers’ Austin George, Chad Mowrey and Nick Schneider were named to the second team. Orange Coast’s Nicolas Dominik and Jered Starling and Irvine Valley’s Ryan Busch also were named to the second team.

Chapman senior Tara McGranahan has been named to the GTE Academic All-District VIII track and field team. McGranahan has a 3.81 GPA, majoring in liberal studies. To receive the nomination, a student must have a GPA of 3.2 or higher and must be a significant contributor to her sport or team. McGranahan will be one of 11 women to represent their district on the national ballot.

Katella’s Tim McMenamin will coach the North team and Irvine’s Bob Flint and Mater Dei’s Bob Ickes will co-coach the South for the 32nd annual Kiwanis Orange County All-Star Baseball Game, June 8 at Cal State Fullerton.

These coaches will review nominations from county baseball coaches and select 22 seniors for each squad. Game time is 7 p.m. and tickets are $5.

Ryan Bettencourt has been named girls’ basketball coach at Northwood High, which is opening in the fall. Bettencourt was an assistant at Ocean View the last two seasons, after previously directing programs at Newport Harbor, Pacifica and Santa Margarita in successive years.

Pete Tereschuk, who coached baseball for 10 years at Laguna Hills High School, has resigned, Athletic Director Dave Brown said.

Tereschuk was 160-106-1 as the Hawks’ coach.

Ken Walker has resigned as girls’ athletic director at Santa Ana High, boys’ Athletic Director Frank Alvarado said.

Walker cited personal and professional reasons for his decision, Alvarado said. Walker will continue to teach history and serve as assistant girls’ basketball coach at the school.

Carlos Venegas has been named cross-country coach at Fullerton High, Athletic Director Julian Smilowitz said.

Laguna Hills outfielder Ryan Johnson has signed a letter of intent with Wake Forest, Athletic Director Dave Brown said.

Johnson, an outfielder, was tied for second in Orange County with 12 home runs. He hit .439 with 34 runs batted in.

Century High right-handed pitcher Brian Cortes has committed to play baseball at Cal State Dominguez Hills, Century Coach Nate Guerrero said.

Cortes, a three-year varsity starter, was 5-5 with a 3.10 earned-run average this season. He had all four of Century’s victories in Empire League play.

Bob Nita has signed to play football and run track at LaSalle, and cross-country and distance runner Guillermo Vargas will attend Stanford, Katella Athletic Director Mike Cochrane said.

Casey O’Brian, a defensive end and offensive tackle for Dana Hills, has signed to play football at Cal Lutheran. Casey was a first-team All-South Coast League selection and will play in the Orange County North-South All-Star Game July 9 at Orange Coast College.

Dana Hills shortstop Gen King has signed with UC Santa Barbara, Dolphin softball Coach Margo Melendrez said.

King (.260) will join teammate Loren Thornburg (13-3, 0.65 earned-run average), who signed with UCSB in November.

Melendrez also said pitcher Nicole Pete (7-1, 0.65) has signed with Cal State Hayward, second baseman Nicole Lev (.210) has made an oral commitment to Concordia, and catcher Liz Lefler (.275, 13 RBIs) has been accepted at Brown.

Christy Pfrenzinger, a senior middle blocker at Santa Margarita, has signed to play volleyball at San Diego State, her father, Steven, said. Pfrenzinger was selected to the all-championship team at the 1998 state tournament.

Matt Mahoney, a wrestler at Villa Park, has orally committed to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Spartan Coach Steve Stewart said. A three-time Century League champion, Mahoney was 55-4 this season. He won the Southern Section Division I and Five Counties titles at 189 pounds. He finished third at the section Masters tournament.

Concordia has signed 6-3 guard Sonny Mannon of College of the Sequoias, Eagle Coach Greg Marshall said. Mannon, who had knee surgery and sat out the 1997-98 season, helped the Giants to a 29-8 record last season.

Sharen Caperton, girls’ athletic director at Brea Olinda High, was one of 1,400 athletic administrators nationwide to be recognized as a certified athletic administrator by the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Assn.
