Strong Play in Goal Lifts Saddleback

Carolina Staub’s play in goal sparked Saddleback to a 10-5 victory over Grossmont in the first round of the Southern California Regional women’s water polo playoffs at Mt. San Antonio College on Wednesday.

Staub had 12 saves for Saddleback, which plays Riverside today at 1:15 in a second-round game. Alexa Olsen had three goals for the Gauchos (18-10).

In another playoff game:

Mt. San Antonio 6, Cypress 1--Marcella Konrad scored four goals for Mt. San Antonio. Johanna Para del Riego scored for Cypress (10-13).

In Orange Empire Conference women’s volleyball:

Cypress 3, Saddleback 0--Heather Storey had 17 kills and Jessica Myles had 32 assists to help Cypress win, 15-2, 15-6, 15-7. Cypress is 12-4, 9-2 in conference. Saddleback drops to 1-16, 1-10.

Golden West 3, Orange Coast 0--Lori Daedelow had a match-high 14 kills as Golden West ran its winning streak to 57 matches with a 15-2, 15-8, 15-6 victory.

Grace Boyd and Julie Renfrow had nine kills each for the Rustlers (16-0, 11-0).

Susie Packard had 13 kills and Becky Baumgarten had 10 for Orange Coast (10-9, 5-6).

Irvine Valley 3, Fullerton 1--Lindsay Johnson had 24 kills for Irvine Valley (13-3, 8-3), which won, 17-15, 15-1, 10-15, 15-11.

Kelly Culver and Karly Reish had 11 kills each for host Fullerton (7-9, 2-9).
