Kiser, Skelly Help Deliver Royal Win in Second Round

Amanda Kiser had 12 kills and Michaela Skelly added 11 to lead the Royal Highlanders to a 15-5, 15-9, 15-8 victory over El Dorado in a second-round Division I-A volleyball playoff at Royal High on Thursday.

The sixth-seeded Highlanders (23-8) advance to the quarterfinals and play Santa Barbara on Tuesday.

“This is about the best we’ve played all season,” Royal Coach Bob Ferguson said.

DIVISION I-AA

Upland def. Oxnard--15-9, 15-3, 15-12--Jennifer Otani had eight kills, 10 digs and four aces in a second-round loss for the Yellowjackets at Oxnard (15-6).

DIVISION II-AA

Westlake def. Garh, 15-5, 15-5, 15-6--Alexis Varian had 10 kills and Amanda Tapking added seven kills and four blocks in the second round for the host Warriors (18-6).

DIVISION III-AA

La Canada def. Santa Ynez, 15-1, 15-5, 15-7--Kelly Gaudino had 13 kills and Tracy Numeier added 30 assists for the No. 4-seeded Spartans (17-0), who advanced to the second round at La Canada.

Notre Dame def. Gabrielino, 15-5, 15-7, 15-13--Rachel Nelson had nine kills and 10 digs in a first-round victory for the visiting Knights (11-6).

DIVISION IV-A

Village Christian d. Cantwell Sacred Heart, 15-9, 15-7, 15-6--Junior outside hitter Maria Abaca had a .259 hitting percentage for host Village Christian (23-4)

Abaca had 10 kills and three errors in 27 attempts, and had seven digs and two aces.

Marlborough def. Providence, 15-3, 16-14, 15-9--Sonia Pelayo had eight kills and 10 digs but the Pioneers (16-3) lost in the first round at Oakwood High.

DIVISION IV-AA

Flintridge Sacred Heart def. Bishop Conaty, 15-1, 15-0, 15-1--Farrell Heydorff had seven kills and Brynne Young had five aces for the Tologs (13-6) in the second round at Flintridge Sacred Heart.

Louisville def. Paraclete, 15-10, 15-10, 15-8--Colleen Hamlin had a .500 hitting percentage and Megan O’Connell had a .524 hitting percentage for the Royals in a victory at Paraclete.

Hamlin had 18 kills and five errors in 26 attempts and O’Connell had 13 kills and two errors in 21 attempts for the Royals (11-8).

DIVISION V-A

Lighthouse Christian Academy d. Ventura Country Christian, 15-2, 15-13, 15-11--Heather Green had 15 kills and Lindsey Summer had 12 aces in the second round for the Saints (20-0).

DIVISION V-AA

Viewpoint def. Western Christian, 15-7, 15-10, 15-9--Darby Stern had 16 kills and Meredith Sherman had 12 in the second round for the host Patriots (16-2).
