Mustangs Run Over Lethargic Cougars

Capistrano Valley took an early six-point lead but that was the extent of their offense Friday night as visiting Trabuco Hills rolled up an 34-6 victory in a South Coast League game Friday night.

After the Cougars (2-8, 1-4) scored 2 1/2 minutes into the game, the Mustangs (5-5, 2-3) barreled through a sloppy-tackling Cougar defense en route to a 20-6 halftime lead.

Quarterback John Baggerley led the Mustang offense, completing nine of 19 passes for 136 yards and a touchdown. He also had 83 yards in 10 carries and a rushing touchdown.

Trabuco Hills’ David Barrett led all rushers with 96 yards in 21 carries.

Daniel Chapman (14 carries for 87 yards) ran 71 yards on the game’s second play to set up the Cougars’ only score, a one-yard plunge by quarterback Jeff Dixon. That was the highlight of the night for Dixon, who completed just one of 15 passes for three yards.

Barrett got the Mustangs even with a 23-yard run with 6:32 left in the first quarter and second-quarter touchdown runs by Deante Pate (30 yards) and Eric Rapley (one yard) put the game out of the Cougars’ reach.
