Perry’s 248 Yards Lead Santiago to 34-0 Rout

Brandan Perry rushed for 248 yards in 31 carries to lead Santiago past host Bolsa Grande, 34-0, Friday night at Bolsa Grande High.

Perry finished the regular season with 1,567 yards and 11 touchdowns.

“I just tried to run hard and help keep our season going,” said an exhausted Perry, “This well could have been our last game.”

Santiago (5-5, 3-3 in league) needed a victory to keep its playoff hopes alive. Garden Grove, Pacifica, and Los Amigos grabbed the top three spots in the Garden Grove League, so Santiago’s only hope is a wild-card berth.

Perry led a balanced Cavalier attack against a weary Matador defense. He gained 133 yards in the first half, outgaining the Bolsa Grande offense, which managed only 27 yards in the half.

Santiago drew first blood with 3:09 left in the first quarter on an end-around to wingback Christian Aguirre, who ran into the end zone from 20 yards out.

About 20 seconds later, Cavalier linebacker Nicholas Fitch blocked a punt and Santiago recovered on the Matador 45. On the next play, quarterback Brian Pilkington hit a streaking Trung Nguyen for a 45-yard touchdown pass.

Fitch also picked off an errant pass from Matador quarterback George Orozco. That led to a two-yard touchdown pass from Pilkington to Nguyen and a 21-0 second-quarter lead.

Bolsa Grande finished 1-9 and 1-4.
