Rustlers Win Two Titles in Water Polo

Sharon Vanderpas scored three goals to lead two-time defending state champion Golden West to a 6-3 victory over Riverside in the title game of the Southern California women’s water polo championships Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College.

Kim Steele had two goals and six steals and Chelsea Rowlands had one goal for the Rustlers (31-1-1), who took a 5-0 lead at halftime. Stephanie Lombardo made five saves for Golden West, which advances to the state championships next weekend at Diablo Valley College.

In the Southern California men’s water polo championships:

Golden West 13, Riverside 2--Logan Shaw, Kevin Marsh and Nenad Praporski each scored three goals in the championship game to lead the Rustlers (29-2-1), who outscored Riverside 7-0 in the second half.

In Orange Empire Conference football:

Santa Ana 45, Golden West 17--The Dons (6-3, 3-1) scored on five of six first-half possessions and held on to a share of the Central Division lead with the win at OCC.

Cameron King scored four touchdowns to lead Santa Ana. The sophomore from Savanna rushed for 157 yards and three touchdowns and caught a 20-yard scoring pass from Grant Wagner.

Palomar 58, Saddleback 7--Quarterback Greg Cicero threw three touchdown passes and Keiki Misipeka rushed for 130 yards and scored two touchdowns, one on a 70-yard run, to lead host Palomar (7-2, 3-1) in a Central Division game.

Saddleback (3-6, 1-3) scored its only touchdown on a nine-yard pass from Adam Hoover to Chris McCormack. Hoover finished with 28 completions in 53 attempts for 274 yards, but had five passes intercepted.

Riverside 41, Fullerton 16--Aaron Karmann rushed for 132 yards in nine carries and scored two touchdowns to lead host Riverside (4-5, 3-1) in a Central Division game. Marshall Johnson ran for 116 yards in the first half and scored on a 34-yard run for the Tigers.

Fullerton (3-6, 2-2) scored touchdowns on Jeff Crooks passes of 51 and 30 yards to Craig Phillips and Antoine Wetherspoon.

Mt. San Antonio 48, Orange Coast 6--Visiting Mt. San Antonio, ranked 12th in the nation by the J.C. Grid-Wire, dominated from start to finish for its sixth victory in a row, in a Northern Division game. The Mounties (7-2, 4-0) recorded seven sacks of OCC quarterback Jared Flint, who was also tackled once for a loss on a running play. Flint’s losses totaled 62 yards.

Orange Coast, which had five turnovers, finished with a net loss of 12 yards rushing--and that number would have been much worse if not for Ray Ohrel’s 70-yard touchdown run with 4:29 left in the game.

Mt. San Antonio’s Alfonso Boone, who is 6 feet 5 and 300 pounds, dominated the line of scrimmage early from his defensive tackle spot. He had three sacks in the first quarter.

Flint threw 27 passes, several while under great pressure or on the run. He completed 13 and threw three interceptions. He finished with 152 yards passing.
