Injury Takes the Air Out of Newbury Park

Newbury Park High passed for 67 yards against Royal last week, believed to be its lowest total since 1990.

Since losing quarterback Chris Lombardo for the season because of a broken leg, the Panthers’ traditionally strong passing game has been grounded.

Backup Cameron Merrill, who dislocated his right shoulder in June, has struggled since taking over.

“Our offense is so much timing and so much practice,” Coach George Hurley said. “That’s just not there right now. It’s taking us time to catch up.”

Fortunately for the Panthers (3-1), running back Marcus Crawford has shouldered the offensive load. He had 37 carries for 180 yards in a 24-7 victory over Royal.

“He’s very likely the best that’s ever played here,” Hurley said.

Running back Julian Lambert of Westlake is expected to play in a Marmonte League game Friday night against Royal.

Lambert, who has rushed for 135 yards and four touchdowns in four carries, has been hobbled by a sprained ankle since the second game of the season.

Alemany High (4-0), on the strength of its 24-21 victory over Notre Dame last week, debuted at No. 9 in the Southern Section Division I poll.

The other three teams in the Del Rey League are also in the poll, No. 1 Bishop Amat (4-0), No. 4 St. Paul (4-0) and No. 10 Loyola (3-1).

Hart (4-0) took over the Division III top spot vacated by Notre Dame (3-1), which slipped to No. 4.

St. Francis (4-0) rose from No. 4 to No. 2.
