Century 38, Whittier 13--Fortino Rivera’s five touchdowns and 230 yards rushing in 25 carries led Century at Whittier California.

After a sluggish start, Century (2-3) scored with 1:05 remaining in the first quarter on Rivera’s 10-yard run to go ahead, 6-0.

Century scored on three of its four possessions in the second quarter. A 25-yard touchdown pass from Giovanni Alcaraz to Joel Mijares early in the second quarter put Century up, 12-0.

Whittier’s Esteban Leyva returned the ensuing kickoff 97 yards for the Cardinals’ first score.

After a stalled Century drive, Whittier took possession and was driving for a possible go-ahead score when Rivera intercepted Michael Moya’s pass and returned it 48 yards to the Whittier 19.

Three plays later, Rivera scored on a one-yard run to put the Centurions up, 18-7. Rivera would score once more before the half on a six-yard run with 41 seconds left before halftime.

Century’s defense held Whittier (1-4) to only 12 yards of total offense in the first half, and gave up 145 yards for the game.

Rivera, who sat out the fourth quarter, ran for 108 yards in the third quarter.
