Ace Loses but Burroughs Is Too Much for Valencia, 13-5

Dragana Ognenovska of Burroughs High dropped her first set of the season but the Indians had little trouble beating Valencia, 13-5, in a Foothill League girls’ tennis match on Tuesday at Burroughs.

Ognenovska, who is 14-1 this season, lost to Julia Peek of Valencia, 6-1, but rebounded to win her next two.

Double teams Melissa Hooven and Michelle Hildreth, and Jenny Wooldridge and Catherine Williams swept for Burroughs (9-0, 5-0 in league play).

In other girls’ tennis matches:

Agoura 11, Newbury Park 7--Brooke Borisoff did not lose a game in sweeping three sets for the Chargers (6-5, 5-1) in a Marmonte League match at Newbury Park.

Leah Kirsch won two of her three sets at No. 2 singles for Agoura.

Kamala Kiffe and Erin Zuckman won two of three sets at No. 1 doubles for Newbury Park (4-7, 2-4).

Granada Hills 7, El Camino Real 0--Jasmin Dao, Kelly Takeshita and Yuka Otaka went unbeaten in singles for the Highlanders (7-0, 4-0) Granada Hills in a West Valley League victory at Granada Hills.

Dao is to 7-1 this season, and Takeshita and Otaka are unbeaten.

Chatsworth 6, Taft 1--Twins Natalie and Jackie Avina won their matches to help the Chancellors (2-5, 2-2) sweep singles competition and the No. 1 doubles team of cousins Christine Le and Thao Le a picked up a doubles victory in a West Valley League match at Chatsworth.

Buckley 13, Whitney 5--Jessica Shofler, Jessica Werber, and Leala Shah swept their singles matches to lead the Griffins in a Delphic league victory at Whitney.

Hillary Swick and Megan Gelfan swept at No. 2 doubles, 7-6, (7-4), 6-3, and 6-4, for Buckley (8-2, 4-1).

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Sylmar def. Reseda, 15-6, 15-2, 15-5--Stephanie Cisneros and Ofelia Ramirez each had seven kills and the Spartans (6-1, 4-0) won a Valley Mission League match at Sylmar.

Saugus def. Hart 10-15, 10-15, 16-14, 15-12, 15-3--Gina Boersma had 14 kills and Jenny Hastings contributed 31 assists for the Centurions in a Foothill League victory at Hart.

“Jenny [Hastings] played the best match of her life,” Coach Bobbi Estes of Saugus (5-2, 3-0) said.

Freshman Casey Boller collected 15 kills and 22 digs for Hart (3-5, 1-2).

Westlake def. Agoura, 15-1, 15-6, 15-6--Julia Varshavsky had four aces and the Warriors (11-2, 6-0) won a Marmonte League match at Westlake.

Royal def. Simi Valley, 15-4, 15-10, 15-11--Amanda Kaiser had nine kills and the host Highlanders (6-4, 5-1) won a Marmonte League match.

GIRLS’ GOLF

Foothill League match No. 2--Sophomore Sara Jones of Hart led the way with a three-over-par 34 and teammate Alexis Arnold shot a 37 for the Indians (21-0, 10-0) at El Cariso Golf Course in Sylmar.

La Reina 126, Lompoc 163--Senior Jennifer Marshall shot a three-over-par 38 to lead the Regents to victory in the Tri-Valley League opener at Los Robles Golf Course in Thousand Oaks.

Seniors Tralee O’Hanlon was La Reina’s No. 2 player at 43 and Susanne Dunwell was at 45, for defending league champion La Reina (4-1).

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Ventura 6, Oxnard 1--Freshman Sarah Costello recorded her first college hat trick for the Pirates in a Western State Conference Northern Division victory at Oxnard.

Costello, a graduate of Ventura High, and Lacy Hanna scored two goals in the first half for Ventura (9-3-3, 5-0-2), the state’s fifth-ranked team.

Tenley Garcia scored in the 54th minute for Oxnard (8-2-4, 4-1-2).

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Cal Lutheran def. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 15-5, 15-10, 15-5--Freshman Sally Jahraus had 11 kills and one error in 17 attempts, giving her a .588 hitting percentage for the Regals in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match at Cal Lutheran.

Jahraus also contributed five digs and a solo block.

Junior Sara Fristad added 10 kills and four errors in 20 attempts for the Regals (11-8, 5-0), to finish with a .300 hitting percentage.
