Herrera Rushes for 300 Yards as La Habra Wins

La Habra High’s Josh Herrera rushed for 300 yards in 44 carries and scored four touchdowns to lead the Highlanders to a 28-14 victory over Sonora in a Freeway League opener Friday at La Habra High.

Herrera scored on a three-yard run to cap an 80-yard drive with 4 minutes 12 seconds left in the game to give La Habra a 21-14 lead.

Herrera put up the game’s final touchdown on a 38-yard run with 1:35 remaining. The score was set up when the Highlanders (2-4, 1-0) recovered an errant Sonora snap on the Raiders’ 46-yard line.

Sonora (2-4, 0-1) failed to capitalized on several scoring opportunities, missing field-goal attempts of 38 and 44 yards in the second quarter and 37 yards in the fourth. The Raiders also turned the ball over four times, three on fumbles and one on an interception.

Herrera opened the scoring when he ran 24 yards for a touchdown with 5:07 left in the first quarter. Sonora tied the score when Jerron Cannon scored from 20 yards out with 4:36 left in the first.

Steve Padilla recovered Herrera’s fumble and returned it 100 yards for a touchdown to give the Raiders a 14-7 lead with 7:44 left in the third quarter.

La Habra Coach Frank Mazzotta was pleased with his team’s performance. “It does not get any better than this. Josh Herrera was prepared to play football tonight. He was physically and mentally in the zone tonight.”
