Reseda Makes Run at Perfect Season

Reseda’s five-game winning streak has surprised everyone--except longtime Coach Joel Schaeffer.

“The team has progressed steadily from the beginning,” he said. “We don’t have a lot of depth, but we are playing well.”

The only thing that surprises Schaeffer, who has a record of 151-79-5 in 22 seasons, is that his team is getting attention.

“Usually we have to be 8-1 before anybody notices,” he said.

The Regents (6-0) won their opener by forfeit because Chatsworth used an ineligible player.

Since then, a three-pronged running attack of Eddie Robinson, Allen Johnson and Jason Wagner has ridden herd over the opposition. Reseda has rushed for 1,514 yards and averages nearly eight yards per carry.

Robinson, a junior tailback, has 721 yards and eight touchdowns. Wagner, a 5-9 wingback, has 410 yards and averages 8.9 yards a carry. Wagner and Robinson have 22 of the team’s 32 receptions.

Johnson, a 6-2, 230-pound fullback, has 262 yards, a 6.2-yard average, and numerous pancakes blocking for Robinson and Wagner.

“A big reason for that kind of success is our experienced offensive line,” Schaeffer said.

Tackle Rudy Ordaz and guards Eric Ochoa and Jesse Pizarro are second-year starters. Center Travis Fausey and tackle Lee Williams have learned quickly as first-year starters.

“Our problem is that nearly everybody on offense also starts on defense,” Schaeffer said.

That could pose a challenge against unbeaten San Fernando on Friday. The Tigers are as rugged as Reseda but have only five players starting both ways.
