Engilman Displays Streak Smarts

From Staff Reports

Coach Jeff Engilman of Sylmar High was the picture of class after his team had its state-record 69-game league winning streak snapped by Kennedy, 21-20, Friday night.

Both teams and most of the crowd were long gone, but Engilman stayed around, answering questions and agonizing over the pressure his team felt to keep the streak alive.

“My job is to make sure those young men don’t take this too hard,” he said. “Keeping that thing going meant a lot to them.”

Engilman has hinted at retiring for many years, and he did so again during the game. A preteen Sylmar ball boy was sitting on the sideline and Engilman turned to him and said, “You look comfortable. You want a Coke to drink?

“You are just sitting back enjoying the game. . . . That’s what I’ll be doing next year.”
