Harvard-Westlake Defeated In Battle of Top 10 Teams

Despite 11 saves by Joe Axlerad and two goals by Eric Townsend, Harvard-Westlake lost to Newport Harbor High, 10-5, Friday in a second-round game of the John Felix Memorial water polo tournament in San Jose.

The 16-team tournament includes six Division I teams that are ranked in the Southern Section top 10, including No. 5 Harvard-Westlake (16-5) and second-ranked Newport Harbor.

In the first round, the Wolverines defeated Fresno Clovis West, 7-3.

Marty Matthias and Andrew Herr each scored twice for Harvard-Westlake. Axlerad had 12 saves and sophomore Jeff Gross had 13 saves.

Royal 16, Thousand Oaks 3--Derek Anderson scored four goals and Omar DeArmas added three as the Highlanders (19-6, 6-0) won a Marmonte League match at Rancho Simi Community Park.

Steve Foote and Marc Ellison each had two goals for the Highlanders. Chris Andelin, Sean Carnahan, Ramiro Saldain, Sean McIntire and Justin McClure had one goal each.

Royal played without Coach Steve Snyder, who was suspended by the Southern Section for one game after cursing an official while disputing a call during a frosh-soph game between Agoura and the Highlanders on Wednesday. Assistant Devin Hurst took his place Friday.

“I (messed) up,” Snyder said. “I was out of line. I called a team meeting and apologized to the guys. But I shouldn’t have done it. I had to pay the price.”

Malibu 16, Nordhoff 7--Mo Mathies scored six goals and Henry Stern four for the Sharks (18-4, 6-0) in a Frontier League finale at Nordhoff.

Danny Shepherd had three goals for the Rangers (11-11, 3-3).

Agoura 23, Westlake 3--Hans Larsen and Matt Monaco each scored four goals for the Chargers (15-8, 5-2) in a Marmonte League victory at Agoura.

Calabasas 29, Villanova Prep 2--Josh Heiber scored five of his eight goals in the first quarter for visiting Calabasas during a Frontier League match. Jordan Flacco scored five goals in the game.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Ventura 6, Oxnard 0--Desiree Tyree scored in the 75th and 84th minutes and Daniella McCain had two assists and a five-goal second half fueled the Pirates to a Western State Conference Northern Division victory at Ventura.

Leading, 1-0, Ventura (14-3-4, 10-0-2) got two goals by Tyree and one goal apiece by Alicia Garcia, Lacy Hanna and Sarah Costello in a 23-minute span.

The Pirates have an 11-game unbeaten streak.

Cal Lutheran 4, Redlands 2--Jennifer Agostino and Betsy Fisch scored first-half goals for the Regals (14-6, 11-1) in an SCIAC game at Redlands (9-9, 8-4).

MEN’S SOCCER

St. Mary’s 2, Cal State Northridge 1--Nick Marcum scored in the second overtime and the Gaels (7-7-1) won a nonconference game in Moraga.

Frederico Arroyo scored for Northridge (7-9-1).

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Buckley 11, Whitney 7--No. 1 player Jessica Shofler did not lose a game in three sets and No. 3 Leala Shah surrendered just one for Buckley (9-3, 5-2) in a Delphic League victory at Studio City Golf and Tennis.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Crescenta Valley def. Muir, 15-13, 15-2, 15-9--Kallie Greatwood had a team-high nine kills for Crescenta Valley during a Pacific View League match.

Mele Misi served five aces for the Falcons (10-6, 8-1), and Marci English had 26 assists.
