Cal State Northridge’s women’s volleyball team won its season opener Tuesday, defeating host UC Irvine 15-7, 14-16, 15-12, 15-9 behind Laura Szymanski’s 21 kills.

Laura Woiemberghe had 48 assists and 19 digs for the Matadors.

SOCCER

* No. 24 San Diego edged Cal State Northridge’s men’s team 2-1 in overtime on a deflected corner kick Tuesday in San Diego.

The Matadors (2-1) forced overtime with a second-half goal when Steve Ponce’s shot glanced off a Toreros defender. San Diego took a 1-0 lead with a first-half goal by Levi Parker.

On Sunday, the Matadors defeated Cal State Sacramento 2-1 on goals by Mike Preis and Federico Arroyo.

The Northridge women’s team won its first game Sunday, defeating Long Beach State , 1-0, on a goal by Kerrie Clavadetscher.

CROSS-COUNTRY

* Senior Josh Spiker of Ventura High is listed as one of the top six boys’ contenders for the Foot Locker national title in the latest edition of Harrier magazine.

Spiker finished 14th in the national championships last year. He ran school-record times at 1,600 (4:12.19) and 3,200 (8:56.66) meters, and won the state title in the 3,200.

* La Canada High, the two-time Division III champions, is the No. 17-ranked girls’ team in the nation in Harrier magazine’s preseason poll.

FOOTBALL

* Ted Chewning, a senior three-year starter at fullback for Fillmore High, is doubtful for the Flashes’ season opener Friday against Malibu, Fillmore Coach Matt Suttle said. Chewning, who led Fillmore with 777 yards rushing last season, injured his left knee in a scrimmage last week.

* Oak Park senior running back Adam Messinger is expected to be sidelined until mid-October with a broken left wrist, Eagles Coach Dick Billingsley said. Messinger will be replaced by junior Eric Testan.
