Perhaps Alemany High is ready for Division I.

When the Indians were elevated from the cozier confines of Division III, their administrators and football supporters protested furiously, doing everything but picketing and chanting in front of the Southern Section offices.

But if the Indians’ opener against Hueneme proves to be a template for the season, they should be OK when the big boys start rolling in next month.

The score wasn’t as bad as the opener last season at Hueneme, a 46-21 victory by Alemany.

It was worse.

The Indians rolled up 346 yards and 48 points . . . then the second half began.

When the Indians were done and the scoreboard showed Alemany 65, Hueneme 30, Division III seemed like a permanent part of the past.

“That was a message,” said receiver Derek Goodman, who had eight catches for 160 yards and three touchdowns. “We’re out to compete out here.”

Alemany needed to rack up a convincing early-season victory with challenging nonleague games against Notre Dame, Servite and Santa Margarita on the horizon.

Then comes Del Rey League play--Loyola, Bishop Amat and St. Paul.

Not many cream puffs on the schedule. Not many worries on Friday night.

Hueneme, which advanced to the semifinals of the Division IV playoffs last season and had several returning players, including highly recruited receiver Keary Colbert, was expected to give Alemany a game.

But Hueneme was hurt by two first-half fumbles inside its 15-yard line that led to Alemany touchdowns.

The Vikings also allowed a 55-yard touchdown pass play from Casey Clausen to Goodman on the first play of the game and, early in the second quarter, gave up a 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Goodman.

Goodman finished with four touchdowns.

Clausen completed 17 of 25 passes for 324 yards and five touchdowns.

Alemany totaled 517 yards, Hueneme had 284.

“I think they look like a Division I team,” Coach Larry Miller of Hueneme said. “I think they’re going to hang in there and do a good job.”

Leslie Lee rushed for 144 yards in 13 carries and Dwayne Taylor returned a kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown, but that was about it for the Hueneme highlights.

Colbert scored on a 56-yard hitch-and-go three minutes into the second quarter, but left a few minutes later with a knee injury and did not return.

Next week, Alemany hosts Chatsworth in an intriguing matchup of quarterbacks.

Clausen has committed to Tennessee while senior Matt Cassel of Chatsworth has committed to USC.

“We have no easy games,” Clausen said. “But I think we’ll be OK.”

They sure were on Friday.
