Hogarth Shoots a 66 to Win Mid-Amateur

Tim Hogarth of Northridge shot a five-under-par 66 on Tuesday at the Victoria Club in Riverside to win the 16th Southern California Golf Assn. Mid-Amateur Championship by five strokes.

Hogarth, who won the California Amateur in June at Pebble Beach, finished at 69-69-66--204, beating Craig Steinberg of Van Nuys, who shot 72-68-69--209, and Mark Gardner of Redlands, who totaled 71-70-68--209.

* Brandon DiTullio of Thousand Oaks shot 75-69-70--214 to tie for second Tuesday and help UCLA finish second in the Northwest Classic at Diamond Woods Golf Course in Monroe, Ore. J.T. Kohut, a Bruin freshman from Simi Valley, tied for 13th at 73-76-71--220.

TENNIS

* Jasmin Dao beat Leslie Damion of Newport Beach, 6-1, 6-2, and reached the semifinals Saturday in the girls’ 16 division of the Fall Junior tournament at Cerritos College.

Samantha Hammond of La Reina advanced with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Monica Wiesener of Woodland Hills.

In the girls’ 18s, Melissa Nguyen of Campbell Hall High won by default over Diana Friedland of Van Nuys, and Georgette Wright of Burbank defeated Tanai Talaid of Rosemead, 6-3, 6-1.

Sarah Cohen of Chatsworth beat Michele Murphy of Laguna Hills, 8-6, 6-3, to reach the girls’ 10s final. Hovik Mazmanyan of Glendale beat Cyprian Pisarek of North Hollywood, 6-3, 6-1, to reach the boys’ 10s final.

VOLLEYBALL

* Kasey Jungwirth of Cal State Los Angeles, from Camarillo High, was chosen California Collegiate Athletic Assn. volleyball women’s player of the week.

SOFTBALL

* Senior catcher Sara Hall of Calabasas made a commitment to play for Purdue after taking an official visit last weekend.

* Gary Weisner, athletic director at Chatsworth High, has resigned his position.

His departure comes in the wake of the Chancellors forfeit of their season-opening 61-28 football victory over Reseda because of an ineligible player.
