PIGSKIN PROPHECIES

Share

Desperate times call for desperate measures. After getting kicked in the pajama pants last week, your red-faced swami hit the streets in search of even tougher competition. (Nudge, wink). We found the gracious Charlotte Stein, 77, a retired secretary from North Hills who hasn’t been to a high school football game since she attended Great Falls High in Montana in the late 1930s. Charlotte couldn’t remember her school’s nickname, to which her husband Murry, 82, replied: “They couldn’t afford one.” Bring it on, girl!

GAME OF THE WEEK (5 points)

Clovis West at Westlake

THE PROPHET SAYS: Last year, Westlake kicked Times’ scribe Eric Sondheimer off the sideline during a game. Now the Warriors have scheduled a team that is going to kick them all over the field. Let’s see how they like it! Clovis West, 38-21.

STEIN SAYS: I’ll take Westlake. My sister lives there. Westlake, 20-7.

OTHER TOP GAMES (each 3 points)

Crescenta Valley at St. Francis

THE PROPHET SAYS: We like St. Francis for two reasons: 1) Coach Bill Redell, who has his best team since his glory days at Crespi, and 2) Quarterback John Sciarra, whose father was a star quarterback at UCLA before handicapped parking became a fad in Westwood. St. Francis, 24-21.

STEIN SAYS: La Crescenta is a pretty area. Crescenta Valley, 62-48.

*

Peninsula vs. Valencia at Canyon High

THE PROPHET SAYS: Shockingly, Valencia started the season with a 5-foot-7 quarterback and lost him to injury in the first game. Physical Peninsula will inflict more punishment on the banged-up Vikings. Peninsula, 35-24.

STEIN SAYS: I’m not too crazy about Valencia. Palos Verdes holds some very fond memories. Peninsula, 17-5.

*

Chatsworth at Alemany

THE PROPHET SAYS: The Clausen and Cassel aerial circus should be the best show in town. But Alemany will have more success slowing down Cassel than Chatsworth’s porous defense will have trying to stop mighty Casey. Alemany, 42-21.

STEIN SAYS: I’m a Jewish person, nondenominational. Let’s give the Catholics a chance. Alemany, 30-5.

THE REST (1 point each)

* Cleveland at Reseda: The Prophet: Reseda, which picked up a forfeit victory after getting hammered by Chatsworth, better hope Cleveland also has an ineligible player. Cleveland, 28-14. Stein: Reseda, 58-38.

* Canoga Park at Monroe: The Prophet: This game will come down to which is mightier, Canoga Park’s pass or Monroe’s run. We prefer air travel. Canoga Park, 24-14. Stein: Monroe, 40-38.

* Birmingham at Van Nuys: The Prophet: A grudge match has developed after six Birmingham players transferred to Van Nuys. Now they show why they left. Van Nuys, 21-14. Stein: Birmingham, 56-38.

* Agoura at Camarillo: The Prophet: Camarillo let me down last week by losing to Canyon. I’m not making the same mistake twice. Agoura, 27-21. Stein: Camarillo, 20-18.

* Sylmar at Antelope Valley: The Prophet: If you hear an agitated voice echoing across the High Desert on Friday night, don’t be alarmed, it’s only Sylmar Coach Jeff Engilman. Antelope Valley, 17-14. Stein: Sylmar, 42-10.

* Hart at Thousand Oaks: The Prophet: Thousand Oaks, which couldn’t stop Crescenta Valley’s Scott Vossmeyer last week, absorbs another bombing raid from Kyle Matter. Hart, 49-14. Stein: Hart, 64-25.

* Harvard-Westlake at North Hollywood: The Prophet: Running back Luke Hornblower is hitting the right notes for the Wolverines. Harvard-Westlake, 32-14. Stein: North Hollywood, 52-40.

* Chaminade at El Camino Real: The Prophet: Chaminade was a two-point conversion away from victory last week. This time, the Eagles get in. Chaminade, 22-21. Stein: Chaminade, 58-36.

* Granada Hills at Royal: The Prophet: The battle of the Highlanders figures to be a Royal whipping. Granada Hills, 31-14. Stein: Granada Hills, 20-18.

* Rio Mesa vs. Buena at Ventura High: The Prophet: Buena was overmatched against Westlake, but not this week. Buena, 32-20. Stein: Buena, 40-34.

* Hueneme vs. Daytona Beach (Fla.) Mainland at Orlando, Fla.: Hueneme faces two obstacles--a tough Florida team and Hurricane Floyd. Mainland, 35-21. Stein: Hueneme, 64-50.
