Preciado Helps Outfox Grant, 4-3

Gladys Preciado won the last seven games to to defeat Shayna Fox, 8-5, at No. 1 singles and help San Fernando beat defending City Division champion Grant, 4-3, in a nonleague girls’ tennis match Thursday at Grant.

Preciado, a senior, beat Fox for the first time in five meetings in her high school career. Preciado’s victory was San Fernando’s only singles victory.

San Fernando (1-0) reversed a 5-2 loss to the Lancers in the semifinals of the City Division playoffs last year.

Grant (0-1) got singles victories by Erin Klibanow, Nicole Brown and Rebecca Benitez.

The Tigers (1-0) swept in doubles play, with the No. 1 team of Claudia Perez and Valerie Mendoza blanking Sarah Hook and Amela Syhapanha, 8-0.

Granada Hills 14, Valencia 0--Jasmine Dao at No. 1 singles and Kelly Takeshita at No. 2 each swept two sets for the Highlanders in an intersectional match played in a modified round-robin format at Valencia.

Calabasas 14, Royal 4--Kathy Habuki and Andrea Leewong did not give up a game at No. 3 doubles for the Coyotes (3-0) in a nonleague victory over Royal at Rancho Simi Community Park.

Annie Tran won two of three sets for Royal (0-3).

Harvard-Westlake 13, Marlborough 5--Jessica Leck, Chelsea Dillon and Chelsea Heller each swept three sets and the Wolverines won all nine singles sets in a nonleague match at Marlborough.

St. Bonaventure 15, Rio Mesa 3--Alyssa Halcomb beat three opponents by 6-0 scores at No. 1 singles and Catherine Hillman and Katherine Edsall did the same at No. 1 doubles for the Seraphs (4-0) in a nonleague victory at Rio Mesa.

Campbell Hall 17, Village Christian 1--Melissa Nguyen dropped 11 points at No. 1 singles in sweeping three sets by 6-0 scores as the Vikings (3-0) won a nonleague match at Valley College.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Burroughs 16, Peninsula 8--Jason Falitz had 13 goals, two steals and one assist for the Indians (6-1) in a Jim Toring Tournament pool play game at Harvard-Westlake.

Harvard-Westlake 11, Agoura 7--Joe Axelrad made 21 saves for the Wolverines in a pool-play victory in the Jim Toring tournament at Harvard-Westlake.

VOLLEYBALL

Oxnard def. Camarillo, 15-10, 15-5, 15-1--Sarah Morrisson had 15 kills and nine digs, and the No. 10-ranked Yellowjackets (2-0, 1-0) won a Pacific View League game at Oxnard.

Crescenta Valley def. Village Christian, 6-15, 15-4, 4-15, 15-10, 15-6--Kallie Greatwood had 17 kills and the Falcons (1-1) won a nonleague match at Crescenta Valley.

Marymount def. Louisville, 15-6, 9-15, 15-12, 15-11--Colleen Hamlin had 15 kills, eight digs and six aces in a losing effort for the Royals (1-2) at Louisville.

La Reina def. Nordhoff, 15-3, 15-3, 15-2--Jennifer Ryan had 16 kills, two aces and three blocks for the Regents (2-0) in a nonleague match at La Reina.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Northern Arizona def. Cal State Northridge, 17-15, 15-17, 15-5, 15-11--Amber Thom had career highs of 21 kills and 12 blocks to help the Lumberjacks (5-2) win a Big Sky Conference opener.

Laura Szymanski had 23 kills, 11 digs and seven blocks for Northridge (1-2).
