No. 1 Santa Margarita (1-0) vs. Carlsbad (1-0)
7:30 TONIGHT CARLSBAD HIGH
Santa Margarita, ranked fifth in the state by Cal-Hi Sports, beat Carlsbad in a close game last year at Saddleback College. But the Eagles will have their hands full this year in a battle between the No. 1-ranked teams in Orange and San Diego counties. The Lancers, San Diego Section Division I finalists last year, are ranked 12th in the state. They return 13 starters and have five Division I college prospects, three of whom have committed to Pac-10 schools. Pana Faumuina, a 6-foot, 250-pound player who is headed to Cal, is a triple threat. In last week’s 40-28 victory against Lawndale Leuzinger, he rushed for three touchdowns, threw for one and caught one.
