This Week, St. Margaret’s Is on the Winning Side of Rout
After taking a beating last week, St. Margaret’s bounced back to shut out California School for the Deaf Riverside, 54-0, at Capistrano Valley High Thursday night.
“After last week [St. Margaret’s lost to Carlsbad Army-Navy, 56-27], it’s good to see that we could go across the goal line,” Tartan Coach Brady Lock said. “There’s something about scoring that seems habitual.”
Five players scored touchdowns for St. Margaret’s (1-1). Rhett Swanson, Andreas Werner and Ryan Birtcher each finished with two, while Drew Smith and Matt McGraw added one each.
The Tartans did not waste any time getting on the scoreboard.
A CSDR fumble six seconds into the game recovered by junior defensive end Brent Comerford at the Cubs’ 16-yard line. St. Margaret’s scored on the ensuing play seven seconds later on Rhett Swanson’s quarterback keep on an option right.
Birtcher recovered another fumble at the CSDR 6, and ran the ball into the end zone, making the score 28-0.
Alex Burns finished with two catches for 60 yards for CSDR (1-1).
The Tartans’ relentless 4-3 defense held the Cubs to minus-15 yards rushing in the first half. They did not throw a single pass in the game.
