Mater Dei Beats Corona del Mar in Girls’ Tennis

Mater Dei, ranked fourth in the county, won six of nine doubles sets and defeated second-ranked Corona del Mar, 10-8, in a nonleague girls’ tennis match Thursday at Mater Dei.

Melissa Esmero, Mater Dei’s top singles player, played doubles with Erin Herrel and they won three sets, 6-0, 6-3, 6-0. Brittany Reitz won two of three singles sets for the Monarchs (2-0), including a 6-3 victory over Corona del Mar’s top singles player, Nadia Vaughan.

Mary Hung also won two of three singles sets for Mater Dei.

Vaughan won her other two sets, 6-1, 6-1, for Corona del Mar (1-2), which also lost Tuesday to sixth-ranked Dana Hills.

In Garden Grove League girls’ tennis:

La Quinta 11, Rancho Alamitos 7--Hien Hoang and Hanh Hoang won in doubles, 6-4, 6-0, 6-0 for host La Quinta (2-0, 1-0).

In nonleague girls’ volleyball:

University 3, Mission Viejo 1--Katie Brandt had 17 kills and Natalia Topik had 43 assists to lead host University (2-1) to a 17-15, 13-15, 15-4, 15-8 victory. Katy Terry had 19 kills for Mission Viejo (2-2).

In the Long Beach Millikan boys’ water polo tournament:

No. 8 Los Alamitos 10, Irvine 9 (OT)--Erik Geoffrey scored is fifth goal on a backhander from two-meters with 1 minute 41 seconds remaining in overtime for the Griffins (1-0).

In a nonleague game:

Valencia 9, Orange 8--With one second remaining, Paco Rivera scored the game-winner from two meters for visiting Valencia (3-2). The Tigers’ Matt Straw scored a season-high five goals.
