Hueneme Goes a Long Way but Comes Up Short, 36-20

Jason Austin of Hueneme High rushed for two touchdowns but the Vikings lost to Daytona Beach Mainland, 36-20, at Lake Buena Vista, Fla., on Saturday night.

Hueneme (0-2) cut its deficit to 22-20 with 14 seconds left in the third quarter on a 42-yard touchdown pass play from Gordy Pinedo to Dwayne Taylor, but the Vikings failed on the two-point conversion.

Mainland (3-0) struck for touchdowns on its next two possessions to put the game away.

Fullback Walter Washington scored on a 25-yard run with 11:13 left and tailback P.J. Smith followed with a 66-yard touchdown run with 5:02 remaining.

Austin had a one-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and a four-yard score in the second, but Hueneme gave up four touchdowns on plays measuring 25 yards or more.

Austin gained 48 yards in 14 carries for the Vikings and Leslie Lee had 35 yards in six carries.

Pinedo completed seven of 13 passes 125 yards.

Montclair Prep 49, Downey Calvary Chapel 13--Gary Sonkur rushed for 246 yards and four touchdowns in 18 carries for the Mounties (2-0) in a nonleague game at St. Mathias High in South Gate.

Montclair Prep, which gained 361 yards rushing, scored 29 points in the first quarter.

The Mounties took a 15-0 lead on a 46-yard run by Sonkur and then broke the game open when Ron Adams scored on a 47-yard punt return.

Jaime Banuelos threw two touchdown passes for Calvary Chapel (1-1), which trailed, 35-13, at halftime.

Webb 46, Campbell Hall 30--Matt Kaplan completed 15 of 34 passes for 315 yards and four touchdowns for the Vikings, who allowed 410 rushing yards in a nonleague defeat at Webb.

Aaron Kerr caught seven passes for 210 yards and three touchdowns, including a 70-yard touchdown from Kaplan that gave Campbell Hall (1-1) an 18-17 lead late in the second quarter.

Sean Jody scored on a 39-yard interception return with 18 seconds left in the third quarter to give the Vikings their last lead, 30-25.

Kaplan and Kerr connected on a 36-yard touchdown pass play to complete an 11-play, 75-yard drive that pulled Campbell Hall to within 7-6 late in the first quarter.

Blake Lichtig caught a 21-yard touchdown pass to give the Vikings their first lead, 12-10, midway through the second quarter.
