Honors Keep Piling Up for Fullove

Senior forward Branduinn Fullove of Simi Valley High has been selected to the 10-player all-state boys’ basketball team by Cal-Hi Sports.

Senior guard Russell Lakey of Harvard-Westlake was a second-team choice.

Senior guard Gene Myvett of Littlerock and senior forward Brett Michel of Simi Valley made the third team.

Selections to all-division teams included Fullove in Division I, junior forward Scott Borchart of Chaminade, junior guard Cody Pearson of Notre Dame and Lakey in Division III, and senior guard Hassan Bassiri of Campbell Hall and senior forward Josiah Johnson of Montclair Prep in Division V.

Pearson was recognized as one of the state’s top 20 juniors and guard Steve Smith of Taft was recognized as one of the top five freshmen.

* Senior guards Kate Beckler of Alemany and Alex Gientke of Ventura have been selected to the all-state girls’ basketball team by Cal-Hi Sports.

Beckler was chosen to the All-Division III team.

Forward Kelly Greathouse and guard Courtney Young of Buena were recognized among the top 20 juniors in the state.

BASEBALL

* Poly High will name its baseball field in honor of former Coach Jerry Cord, who retired this year from teaching after arriving at the Sun Valley campus in 1967.

The school has created a scholarship fund in Cord’s honor to benefit Poly students. Anyone interested in donating funds can send checks made out to the Jerry Cord Scholarship Fund, c/o Poly High, 12431 Roscoe Blvd., Sun Valley, Calif., 91352.

FOOTBALL

* Troy Jackson has been appointed the coach at Lancaster High.

Jackson, a former Canyon player who served as Lancaster’s offensive coordinator last year, replaces Ray DeShane, who resigned after five seasons.

SOCCER

* Santos Laguna of Torreon, a first-division professional team from Mexico, will play an exhibition against amateur squad San Nicolas of Santa Barbara at 3 p.m. Sunday at Channel Islands High.

A preliminary game at 1 p.m. will feature Copandaro against Honda Rockets, two Oxnard amateur teams.

Admission is $12 for adults, $5 for children 6 to 11 and free for children under 6. Tickets are available at Cabo Restaurant, 1041 South Oxnard Blvd.; Hacienda Casa de Cambio, 100 East 5th St.; Carniceria El Matador No. 1, 3801 Saviers Road; Mora’s Boots, 2643 Saviers Road.

WATER POLO

* Jeanine Jackson of Harvard-Westlake has committed to Stanford, one of the top programs in the nation.

SWIMMING

* Kristine Quance-Julian, who attended USC and Granada Hills High, placed second in the women’s 400-meter individual medley in 4:43.20 Thursday at the Phillips 66 Spring National Championships in Federal Way, Wash.

Quance-Julian finished behind Kaitlin Sandeno of El Toro, who won in 4:42.74.

Maureen Farrell, a junior at Alemany High, finished 12th in the women’s 200 backstroke in 2:18.19 Wednesday.

Joel Everman of USC, a Notre Dame High graduate, placed 26th in the men’s 800 in 8:22.32 on Tuesday.

* Freshman Anthony Ervin of California, a Hart High graduate, won the NCAA Division I 100 freestyle championship in 47.36 seconds Saturday in Minneapolis.

The title was the second of the meet for Ervin. He also won the 50 freestyle in a short-course world-record time of 21.21 seconds.

MOTORSPORTS

* Bryan Herta of Valencia was given a reason to celebrate Thursday, even though his season in the Championship Auto Racing Teams series remains on hold because of a franchise dispute between car-owner Gerald Forsythe and CART.

Herta’s wife, Janette Herta, gave birth to the couple’s second child, Colton Thomas Herta. Colton weighed 6 pounds 12 ounces and was 19 1/2 inches. Mother and son are expected to return home this weekend.

The Hertas have a 2-year-old daughter, Calysta.
