Chatsworth’s Fisher Picks Sooners

Matt Fisher, an All-City Section shortstop for Chatsworth High, announced Monday he has committed to Oklahoma.

Fisher is the only returning starter from the Chancellors’ 1999 City Championship team.

* The Lancaster JetHawks will hold an open workout from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Gates open to the public at 6:15.

New Manager Mark Parent and his staff will be available for discussions, as will JetHawk players.

Lancaster opens the season Thursday at Bakersfield and returns home on April 12 for a 7:15 p.m. game against the Mudville Nine, formerly the Stockton Ports.

TRACK AND FIELD

* Seth Cormier of Newbury Park High, who was hit in the side by a shotput during a nonleague meet at Oak Park on Thursday, remained hospitalized at Los Robles Regional Medical Center in Thousand Oaks.

Cormier, a freshman, was hit when he was bending over to pick up his shot after a warmup toss.

He sustained a crack in the outer layer of his right kidney, said Newbury Park Coach Mike Stewart.

SWIMMING

* Granada Hills High graduate Kristine Quance-Julian of the Trojan Swim Club placed second in the women’s 200-meter individual medley with a time of 2:15.14 on Saturday at the Phillips 66 U.S. Spring National Championships in Federal Way, Wash.

Quance-Julian finished behind Martina Moravcova of the Dallas Mustangs, who won in 2:14.44.

In men’s results, Notre Dame High graduate Joel Everman of USC was 26th in the 1,500 freestyle in 15.59.25.

Maureen Farrell of Alemany High and Canyons Aquatics placed 12th in the women’s 100 backstroke in 1:04.57, and Everman was 22nd in the 400 freestyle in 4:00.71.

FOOTBALL

* Former Alemany quarterback Casey Clausen, one of four quarterbacks battling for the starting position at Tennessee, completed five of eight passes for 45 yards Saturday in a scrimmage at spring practice.

Clausen graduated from Alemany in January so he could participate in spring ball.

GYMNASTICS

* Trishna Patel of Northridge won the vault title at the level 10 state championships in Long Beach on March 24-25 and qualified for the regional competition as an all-around competitor.

Patel, 17, is a member of Gymnastics Olympica in Van Nuys. She won the vault with a 9.4 score, was second in floor exercise (9.5) and scored 35.0 points in the all-around competition.

Teammate Miho Maedo, 16, of Sepulveda qualified for the regional by placing second in the uneven bars (9.325) and third in floor exercise (9.325). Teammate Jamie Green, 17, of Los Angeles qualified in the all-around with 35.9 points.

BASKETBALL

* City and Southern Section teams have begun practice for the Battle of the Valley 2000 all-star games Friday night at Cal State Northridge. The doubleheader matches the region’s top seniors in a girls’ game at 5:30 and a boys’ game at 7:30.

MOTOR SPORTS

* Ron Hornaday Jr. finished 17th in the Albertson’s 300 NASCAR Busch Series race Saturday at Texas Speedway in Fort Worth.

NASCAR Winston Cup star Mark Martin won the race.

* Cory Kruseman of Ventura was third, Troy Rutherford of Ojai was ninth and Ed Patterson III of Ventura was 10th in the 30-lap Sprint Car Racing Assn. main event Saturday at Perris Auto Speedway.
