Nasser’s Birdie Gives Friars Playoff Win

Jordan Nasser made a six-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to give second-ranked Servite a victory over unranked Esperanza in a nonleague golf match that started at Los Coyotes March 15 and finished Monday at Eagle Glen in Corona.

Nasser birdied the 162-yard 10th hole at Eagle Glen and the Friars (4-1) won the playoff, 17-18, after the two teams had tied, 383-383, in regulation play.

Servite’s Nico Bollini was the medalist, finishing with a two-under 69. Bollini had three birdies in the match. Jay Choe shot 71 for Esperanza, which led 188-192 after the first nine holes.

In other nonleague matches:

Aliso Niguel 183, St. Margaret’s 207--Jordan Bick shot a school-record, four-under 31 for Aliso Niguel at Aliso Viejo Golf Club.

The sophomore made four birdies and five pars, but could have posted an even lower score. Bick’s putt for an eagle on the par-five No. 6 lipped the cup and spun away and his final birdie putt was two inches short. He also holed his bunker shot on No. 8 to save par.

Aliso Niguel (8-4) also received a good performance from freshman Joseph Kim, who shot a par 35. St. Margaret’s is 3-7.

Santa Margarita 385, Westlake 401, Ojai Nordhoff 422--Sophomore Taylor Wood made seven birdies and finished at two-under 69 at North Ranch in Westlake Village for Santa Margarita (11-0).

In the Orange League:

No. 9 Brea Olinda 182, Fairmont Prep 237--Jason Woodrome shot two-under 33 and teammate John Sandy finished one shot behind for the Wildcats (7-1, 3-0) at Dad Miller. Michael Pastrano shot 41 for Fairmont Prep (3-6, 0-3).

In Sea View League baseball:

No. 9 Irvine 6, Laguna Hills 0--Jon deVries, Terry Parker and Travis Otott homered to back the pitching of winner Chad Hazlett (8-1), who worked out of numerous jams. Justin Hallenbeck had three hits for Laguna Hills (6-6, 5-3), which stranded eight runners.

Woodbridge 2, Aliso Niguel 1--Woodbridge (3-6-1, 2-5) scored twice in the fourth inning on run-scoring hits by Jeff Fry, who drove in Ryan Cummings, and Brian Martinez, who drove in Cole Edmondson.

In nonleague softball:

Santiago 7, Newport Harbor 5--Jody Robertson had a two-run home run, scored two runs and drove in four for host Santiago (8-8), which led, 5-1, after the first inning. Santiago’s Alison Decker (4-3) pitched a complete game to earn the victory.

Amanda Campbell hit a home run for Newport Harbor (9-7).

In Sunset League boys’ swimming:

Los Alamitos 97, No. 8 Fountain Valley 88--John Hanna finished first in the 200 (1 minute 48.13 seconds) and 500 freestyles (4:47.45) and anchored the winning 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams for the host Griffins (2-1).

T.K. Erwin won the 100 butterfly (56.86) and 100 backstroke (58.61) for previously unbeaten Fountain Valley (5-1, 2-1).

In nonleague boys’ tennis:

No. 7 Troy 13, La Verne Damien 5--Troy’s Jeffrey Das, whose record is 41-1 this season, swept his singles sets, 6-2, 6-1, 6-0, and twins Edward and Edwin Mendoza teamed to win in doubles, 6-2, 6-3, 6-0, to improve to 40-2 for the undefeated Warriors (14-0).

Laguna Beach 9, Marina 9 (Laguna Beach wins on games, 78-72)--Laguna Beach’s doubles teams of Michael Rogley and Anton Brandt and Devon Junkin and Vince Marconi swept as the Artists (7-6) took eight of nine doubles points.
