Hussein Helps Sunny Hills Edge Freeway League Foe Buena Park

Sunny Hills’ Ahmad Hussein won two individual events and was part of two winning relay team to help Sunny Hills to a 99-87 victory over Buena Park in the Freeway League boys’ swimming meet Wednesday.

Hussein, who will represent Egypt in the 2000 Olympics, won the 500-yard freestyle (4 minutes 46.17 seconds), 100 backstroke (52.5) and was on the winning 200 medley relay team (1:44.17) and the winning 400 freestyle relay team (3:21.6).

Junior Eric Hanson won the 200 freestyle (1:50.4) and joined Hussein on the winning relay teams for the Lancers (2-2, 2-1).

In Century League boys’ swimming:

No. 2 Villa Park 133, Orange 35--Jimmy Sullivan won the 50 freestyle in 23.98 for the Spartans.

Canyon 109, El Modena 62--Chris Meyer won the 200 individual medley (1:59.1), the 100 freestyle (49.1) and swam anchor on the winning 200 freestyle relay team for the Comanches. Dusty Lozano finished first in the 200 freestyle (1:56.5) and 100 backstroke (1:02.3).

In the Empire League:

El Dorado 91, Cypress 79--Matt Van Eck turned in the third best time in Orange County this season, 49.94 seconds, in the 100 freestyle. Van Eck also won the 50 freestyle (22.35), and anchored the winning 200 medley relay (1:48.57) and 400 freestyle relay (3:31.13) for host El Dorado (4-2, 3-0).

In Century League girls’ swimming:

No. 8 Canyon 98, El Modena 72--Four swimmers won two events each for the host Comanches. Erin Volcan won the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke and her sister Lauren won the 100 and 200 freestyle races. Christy Matthewson won the 200 individual medley (2:19.6) and 100 backstroke (1:02.1) and Sheva Khalafbeigi won the 50 freestyle (26.1) and 500 freestyle (5:23.7). Each swimmer also swam on the winning 200 medley relay (1:56.2) and 200 freestyle relay (1:44.9) teams.

Canyon is 6-1, 3-2. El Modena fell to 1-2 in league.

Villa Park 124, Orange 44--Freshman Kathryn Sullivan won the 200 freestyle (1:57.02) and swam third on the winning 400 freestyle relay team for Villa Park.

Villa Park junior Cindy Henn swam on the winning 200 medley relay (2:03.48) and 200 freestyle relay (1:49.95) and sister Anne swam on the 400 freestyle relay team, which won in 3:33.64.

In the Freeway League:

Sunny Hills 133, Buena Park 45--Carissa Abe won two individual events for Sunny Hills--the 200 freestyle (2:07.5) and the 500 freestyle (5:42.1)--and helped to lead winning relay teams for the visiting Lancers (4-0, 3-0).
