Westminster Rallies to Beat Tustin

Sophomore pinch-hitter Jeff Kerley doubled in runners from second and third with one out in the bottom of the seventh to give Westminster a 6-5 victory over Tustin in a Golden West League baseball game Wednesday at Westminster.

Relief pitcher Chris Carey struck out six of the seven batters he faced to record his third victory.

Westminster, which started the season 1-6, is now 6-6 and 4-1 in league and tied for first place with Tustin (8-5, 4-1).

In another Golden West League game:

Saddleback 7, Ocean View 6--Right fielder Emmett Briggs beat the throw to first on a potential inning-ending double play in the bottom of the seventh to drive in the winning run for the host Roadrunners (5-8, 2-3), who received a three-hit, two-RBI performance from first baseman Fidel Valverde.

In the Empire League:

Kennedy 7, Loara 6--The Saxons rallied on Ivan Escalera’s two-run, seventh-inning double, but the comeback fell short as the Fighting Irish (9-3-1, 5-0-1) prevailed.

Joe Caira and Shawn Benavinte led Kennedy with two hits and two RBIs each. Brian Peterson (1-0) picked up the victory and Ricky Stike earned the save.

Escalera had two hits and drove in two runs for Loara (7-4-1, 3-2-1).

In the Serra League:

No. 6 Mater Dei 12, Servite 11 (8)--With two outs in the top of the eighth, Richard Mercado singled with the bases-loaded, scoring David Gomez and Mike Harris, for the winning runs for the visiting Monarchs (9-4, 3-1).

The Friars scored five runs in the seventh inning to send the game into the extra inning.

In South Coast League:

Capistrano Valley 4, San Clemente 3--Brad Davis broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of sixth with a home run, his fifth of the year, for the Cougars (7-6, 3-3).

Trabuco Hills 11, El Toro 10--Sean Boatright had two run-scoring singles in a seven-run rally in the bottom of the seventh, including the game-winner with two outs to score Mike Thompson from third, for host Trabuco Hills (9-4, 5-1).

In the Sunset League:

No. 4 Esperanza 15, Los Alamitos 10--The visiting Aztecs scored nine in the fourth, then withstood a late-inning Los Alamitos rally.

In the fourth, sophomore center fielder Matt Lawson hit a bases-loaded triple and David Nicholson hit a two-run single. Nicholson finished with four hits, Lawson had three and pitcher Chris Brown (3-0) picked up the victory. Esperanza is 11-2, 4-2.

In nonleague boys’ tennis:

Palos Verdes Peninsula 15, No. 2 Corona del Mar 3--Peninsula (15-0), ranked No. 1 in the Southern Section Division I, swept nine singles sets.
