Moon Runner-Up by 3 Strokes

Roy Moon of Royal High shot a three-under-par 139 to finish three strokes behind Kevin Na of Diamond Bar in the rain-shortened 36-hole Los Angeles City Junior Golf Championships held at the Wilson and Harding courses in Griffith Park.

Moon shot 70 and 69 during the two-day event to claim the runner-up position. Na shot 69 and 67 to defend his championship.

In the boys’ B flight held at Balboa and Encino, Brandon Christianson of Valencia finished in third place at 145, three strokes behind winner Scott McDonald of Mountaingate. Eric Thomas of Valencia took fourth at 146.

In the girls’ championship, Anna Lee from California Country Club shot 146 to win, with Hana Kim of Woodland Hills third at 149.

* Kyle Thurston, 14, of Moorpark won the 13-14 division at the Future Collegians World Tour Northwestern Classic on Sunday with a 36-hole total of four-over-par 146 at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains, Ore.

FOOTBALL

* Former Taft High linebacker DaShon Polk was selected by the Buffalo Bills in the seventh round of the NFL draft.

The 6-foot-2, 230-pound Polk played at Arizona.

Two players with ties to the region signed as free agents with the San Diego Chargers: former Sylmar High and UCLA fullback Durell Price and former Hueneme High and Northern Arizona running back Ronney Jenkins.

TENNIS

Brooke Borisoff, a junior at Agoura High, was the only area player to advance to the round of 16 in singles play Monday at the Easter Bowl Junior Tennis Championships at the Riviera Resort and Racquet Club in Palm Springs.

Borisoff defeated Ashley Schellhas of Edina, Minn., 6-2, 6-4, in the round of 32 of the girls’ 16 division Monday.

Georgette Wright of Burbank lost, 7-5, 6-3, to Eva Wang of Haverford, Penn., in girls’ 16s.

Philip Sheng of Thousand Oaks High, seeded fifth in the boys’ 18 division, was upset by No. 17-seeded Jeremy Wurtzman of Rochester, N.Y., 7-5, 6-4. Prakash Amritraj of Harvard-Westlake High fell, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, to Evan Austin of Naples, Fla., and Calabasas High’s Nick Weiss lost, 6-2, 6-4, to Roger Gubser of Laredo, Texas.

In boys’ 16 singles, sixth-seeded Calabasas resident Lester Cook was upset by No. 24-seeded Eric Hechtman of Miami, Fla., 6-4, 6-2, while Stephen Amritraj of Crespi High fell to Chris Surapol of Whittier, 7-5, 6-4.

James Magsino of El Camino Real High lost, 7-6 (10-8), 1-6, 6-2, to No. 8-seeded Chris Kwon of Boca Raton, Fla., and Sherman Oaks resident David Keyes fell to James Pade of Woodside, 6-3, 6-0, in other boys’ 16 matches.

In doubles, Ryan Heinberg of Agoura Hills and Amir Mirandy of Woodland Hills advanced in boys’ 18, as did No. 7-seeded Sheng and Chad Harris of Aurora, Colo., cousins Prakash and Stephen Amritraj, and Weiss and Jason Pongsrikul of San Diego.

In the boys’ 16 division, No. 3-seeded Cook and Derrick Bauer of Marina del Rey advanced.

MOTOR SPORTS

* Bryan Herta of Valencia overcame handling problems and a spinout Sunday on the 46th lap to finish fifth in the 82-lap Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach.

The CART champ car race was the first of two races in which Herta is substituting for Shinji Nakano in the Walker Racing Reynard-Honda while Nakano recovers from head injuries suffered in a testing accident March 31 at the Milwaukee Mile.

“I went wide on the corner and had to recover the car. . . .” said Herta, who fell from fifth to 13th after the spin.

“I don’t know the car inside and out and I just misjudged it, but I’m getting there. I thought I could get in the corner a little deeper, and it was a last-minute, ‘I don’t think I’m going to make it,’ and I couldn’t.”

Herta told his crew by radio that the car had under-steered with 13 laps remaining.

“I think we set up the car with a bit too much downforce,” Herta said. “I was really quick in the tight sections but a little slow in the straights.”

Herta finished 4.208 second behind winner Paul Tracy.

* Rolando Quintanilla of Calabasas finished 14th in the 38-lap Dayton Indy Lights race at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach Sunday, won by Scott Dixon of New Zealand.

* Rick Hendrix of Simi Valley finished eighth and Kevin Kierce of Reseda 10th in the United Staes Auto Club Western Sprint Car series 40-lap main event Saturday at Mesa Marin Raceway in Bakersfield.

Mike Boat of Phoenix, the brother of Indy Northern Lights Racing Series driver Billy Boat, won the event.

* Ben Walker of North Hills won the 40-lap super late model race Saturday at Irwindale Speedway.

Rip Michels of Mission Hills won the 30-lap grand American modified main event, T.K Karvasek of North Hills won the 40-lap super stock main event, Jon Zernikow of Monrovia won the 30-lap legends main event and Joe Herrold of Poway won the 50-lap Ultra Wheels Spec Truck series main event.

* Steve Conrad of Agua Dulce won the 30-lap sprint car main event Saturday at Ventura Raceway.

Steve Greenland of Reseda won the 30-lap International Motor Contest Assn. modified main event, his 17th career victory.

David Knight of Ventura was the winner of the I-4 modified main, and Brad Long of Los Angeles won the 20-lap pony stock main event.
